Hugo Red by Hugo Boss

I’ll be making my way through plenty of reviews over the next few weeks and today I thought that I’d go with one from Hugo Boss, Hugo Red. I’ve already included this cologne on my list of best by Hugo Boss, however, I want to give it a closer look that I feel it deserves.

In this post, I will explore what makes up Red, what it smells like, how it performs, and whether or not I think it is worth a buy. Note: This page has been updated a few times since its original posting.

Hugo Red Full Review

Hugo Red is quite an interesting scent to me. At times, it reminds me of some other fragrance that I’ve once smelled and at other times it seems wholly unique.

The opening is the usual citrus affair of pineapple and grapefruit notes which give it a spring/summer fruity vibe to it. The pink pepper and amber feel, has a Guess Seductive quality to it.

But, this is a fresher and less heavy kind of cologne.

However, Hugo Red becomes interesting in that there is this almost metallic aroma to it, sort of like Creed Himalaya (which I don’t enjoy) but in Red it is enjoyable.

The spice to this really isn’t really heavy and it’s kind of tough to explain. Red has a warm and woodsy heart that is only slight spicy and provided by the amber, pink pepper, and cedar.

It’s sort of unique because the rhubarb note isn’t all that common in many fragrances and I think that this note is what is setting Hugo Red apart.

This fragrance is quite clean, crisp, and refreshing. People also seem to dig it while I have it on, even if it can seem synthetic/generic at times.

There’s a very slight tonka bean after a while, but it isn’t all that noticeable during most wears.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

It is a moderate projection and I could detect it without having to get close to my skin. It stays moderate for 2-4 hours, before having a lighter sillage, but sticking around for a long while.

This fragrance has a reputation of not lasting long but I got really good wear out of it. I put it on the night before and it was quite noticeable still when I woke up the next morning.

Update: Upon wearing this for a while, I actually can get 8+ hours easily, but it fits in the 8-10 hour range mostly.

This would be a great choice for the warmer months, but I think it’d perform pretty well in wintertime, also. I like to wear it casually or for a night out during the summertime.

Hugo Red isn’t really an office scent, can have more of a youthful vibe. Not just for teenagers, but can work great for guys in their mid-20s. It just works in its simplicity, and has a unique enough vibe, to make it worthwhile.

Overall Impressions of Hugo Red

Overall, is Hugo Red a buy? It does smell good and it’s completely safe to wear for any occasion. I’d say that this could be an everyday summer wear for guys in the 18-30 range. It’s not too expensive and was a solid performer for me.

If you like citrus based scents with a woodsy/spicy heart, then Hugo Red is worth a look. I actually really enjoy this as a summertime citrus fragrance.

It’s unique and has a great blend of tartness and sweetness. That metallic finish is a great addition to making this Hugo Boss scent, stand out on its own.

Is it amazing? No, but it is all around a very good cologne, that has flown under the radar.

Update: Red has been discontinued by Boss. It’s harder to get a hold of bottles, but they do still exist, and usually for a great price. But, that’ll change as soon as the fragrance gets scarce.

I wouldn’t pay too much for a bottle, as it’s basically a fun summertime fragrance. Though, I’d enjoy having it again, if it were still a value.

Boss Bottled Infinite by Hugo Boss

Jumping back into the fragrance review, side of things. I have a post today of a newer release for 2019, in men’s fragrances, Boss Bottled Infinite by Hugo Boss. I didn’t even know, that they had come out with another flanker scent to this lineup, but wanted to give it a try when I saw it. What does it smell like? How does it perform? Is the sillage any good? Is this fragrance worth a try?

My Full Wear Review

This is going to be a one wear review of Infinite, that I will come back and add to, when I spend more time with this fragrance. However, I got to wear it from the store and took along a card sprayed with it, as well. So, I got a solid idea to what this one is all about, not that it’s super complex.

The opening is a blast of mandarin and some apple, at the top, and surrounded by a sense of freshness. It’s a slightly spicy freshness, but at that stage, the notes weren’t too distinguishable from one another.

However, looking at the notes, I’d say it is the cinnamon and rosemary coming through. Those two are probably slightly tempered by lavender and some sandalwood.

As it moves along a bit further, the mandarin takes more of the fruit share from the apple. This is joined by a fully emerged lavender and the smell of rosemary. Very smooth and clean, with that rosemary spice, and woodsy undertones.

Sandalwood? Some. Mostly, what I guess is olive wood, as I’m not familiar with that aroma.

Finally, the dry down, is a woodsy lavender fragrance with some citrus. It’s lavender, wood, patchouli, and mandarin.

At times, this does remind me of Boss Bottled Tonic, but like a stronger inversion. Bottled Tonic, wasn’t great, and this share the fruit and cinnamon. Bottled Infinite beefs up the woodsy notes and doesn’t rely so much of the fruit.

Sillage, Longevity, Versatility

This fragrance starts off fairly strong, for about an hour or two. The sillage is great, at the start, and will get noticed. It calms down substantially, thereafter, and is pretty moderate. Not completely weak. The longevity was pretty good.

Wasn’t an all day wear, based off that one test, but not crummy like some other Boss scents. It probably ran in the 7 hour range, for me. Again, I still want to test it more, but that’s the first go round. Update: Yep, 6-8 hours is what to expect from this one. Mostly, that midpoint 7 hour mark.

The strength of this fragrance, probably stems from its versatility. It isn’t really beholden to any one season, but probably not best at the height of summer.

Seems good for spring or autumn. Winter, it’ll do fine, it’s not the typical heavy cold weather fragrance. This one can pull double duty as a daily wear and/or nighttime go to. Boss Bottled Infinite is a cologne that can cover a lot of ground for those who only want to own a few fragrances.

It has a masculine smell, with an attractive, and sexy sort of aroma. I can see this one becoming a popular cologne over the next few years. In fact, the lady at the department store said that, Infinite was the best seller among the new releases. It should get plenty of complements.

Maybe not the most formal of fragrances, but it is well put together and stylish enough to be a daily wear at the office or school if you’re a younger guy.

Overall Impressions

Do I like Boss Bottled Infinite? Yes, I do. The first wear was nice. Update: Trying this some more, I still really enjoy wearing Infinite. The mandarin, lavender, and wood blend feels distinctly Hugo Boss.

I like the apple and mandarin here and the lavender doesn’t feel like it’s too overwhelming in the mix. Infinite has a nice balance of its ingredients.

Really, this is one of the better Boss Bottled releases, maybe my personal favorite of the past handful of years. Nothing too groundbreaking here, but this formula just works for me.

Like, I’ve come across all of these notes in their other scents, and it brings to mind so many of them. The orange, made me think of Boss in Motion, as that also has a spiciness to it.

It isn’t a terribly complex fragrance, nor is it super original. Nonetheless, it smells good and gives a good performance. Infinite is a well-balanced scent, that is going to be a good option for a guy, who wants a daily wear. Wants something that is easy to reach for and is going to be well-liked by others.

That’s what you’re going to get with this. I do still want to give Boss Bottled Infinite some more wears, but right now, I can recommend it as worth a try.

8 Best Smelling Hugo Boss Colognes

Hugo Boss has a long history in the fashion world. Their fragrance line has been popular for many years and produces good fragrances that can be had in the lower to moderate price ranges. This isn’t a Creed or Bond No. 9, where you are going to be spending a few hundred dollars for a larger bottle of the stuff. Rather, Hugo Boss makes designer fragrances that are both stylish and can be worn for any situation a man may face.

What are the Best Hugo Boss Perfumes for Him?

Most Popular Scent

Hugo Boss Men’s Boss No. 6 Eau de Toilette Natural Spray, 3.3 fl. oz.
No.6 is the most popular Hugo Boss fragrance of the bunch and for very good reason. This cologne is just all around pleasant, moderately priced, and delivers a solid performance.

The apple and cinnamon notes provide a familiar sweetness and warmth from the start of the wear. If feels super clean and gourmand. Then, the vanilla note adds a layer of smoothness over the whole composition.

The dry down, adds wood notes such as sandalwood and cedar, that prevent it from going too far into the sweetness end of things and straying into a women’s fragrance.

Yes, it does have that sort of apple pie aroma, but Boss Bottled No. 6 never feels like a teenage girl’s perfume. This is a very safe to wear fragrance, that has a versatility for most every occasion.  Hugo Bottled Boss Review

Best Boss The Scent Fragrance

Hugo Boss The Scent Absolute for Him Eau De Parfum, 1.6 Fl Oz The series of fragrances under the ‘Boss The Scent’ banner have all been at least pretty good, even with each having their weaknesses.

To me, The Scent Absolute is the best from the series overall. It gives you a closer approximation to the original, but with a spicier profile, and much better performance. It’s fresher and more linear than Private accord, which is also nice, Absolute is just a notch above.

It kicks off with the fresh spiciness of ginger, with a rich use of the signature maninka fruit. It’s fruity and warm, with a nice kick to it. Very masculine, attractive, and fairly unique even against the others in the line. Great and easy to wear. Read my Full Review

Best New Release

Boss Bottled Eau de Parfum This one came out in 2020, so it’s not brand new, but it’s one that I think is enjoyable and worth a shot.

Bottled EDP features apple, bergamot, and a mix of spices up top. Now, it is pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon…but, mostly cardamom paired with the apple now. Cinnamon and pepper flanking those.

Sweet and fresh warmth, the apple note is going to be the star of this one throughout the wear. The spice will settle down and this will have a drier and muskier finish. Masculine sweet/candied kind of apple, while feeling well put together and not cheap.

The sillage isn’t all that powerful, pretty moderate, but it does seem to last pretty long on the skin. Probably best for younger guys through their 20s.

Top Summer Fragrance

Hugo Boss Eau de Toilette Spray, Red, 1.3 Ounce
Hugo Red seems to be an under appreciated fragrance. Its notes include pineapple, cedar, grape fruit, amber, tonka bean, and others.

It also has the distinct notion of being on the lower end of the price range while simultaneously being a well performing and great smelling cologne.

Hugo Red is clean and fruity, though not overpowering, and a perfect option for casual wear.

It opens with that sparkling grapefruit note along with a juicy pineapple.  Red is interesting in that it has this cold metallic note, which while low key, helps to set it apart from many other fragrances.

It has a slightly warm spice from the pink pepper note, but this allows it to have versatility in a wide variety of climates.

Since Hugo Red does have that blanketing spice and warmth, it really shines in the spring and summer months. The performance for me, has always been good. It doesn’t last a crazy long time, but it does last plenty long for almost any purpose. My Hugo Red Review

Another Bottled Boss

BOSS Bottled Infinite Eau de Parfum – Fragrance for Men, 3.3 FL. OZ. Boss Bottled Infinite is a flanker fragrance to the Boss Bottled name, but takes things in a different direction.

It opens up with a fruity blend of apple and mandarin. It has a clean freshness coming from the two spices, being, cinnamon and rosemary. The spice isn’t too intense and is actually pretty well kept in check.

During its dry down Bottled Infinite, becomes woodier, has a nice dose of lavender, and the remaining mandarin orange.

Olive wood is the main wood note, with additional sandalwood. Overall, a moderate sillage, with about 7 hours of wear in my testing of it. Update: May be discontinued now. Bottled Infinite Review

Best Classic Daily Wear Boss Cologne

Hugo Boss MAN Eau de Toilette, 2.5 Fl Oz– This fragrance was released in the mid 1990s and has been chugging along in stores ever since. It starts out with a very ‘green’ freshness with a crisp mint note that is joined by a calming lavender.

The apple note is cold and juicy to go along with a nice, sharp, citric grapefruit. Hugo has a woody heart, with pine, and a spicy profile that is complemented by the aforementioned sweeter notes.

A very nice casual or everyday wear scent by Hugo Boss. It gives a solid performance and is highly versatile, being able to fit in while wearing a suit on the right day, or simply sporting the fragrance around town casually. It’s got a great balance and interesting composition.  Hugo Full Review

Boss for Cold Weather with a Floral Blend

Boss Bottled Night by Hugo Boss for Men – 3.3 Ounce EDT Spray
A very nice and seductive cologne, which is probably best served for guys in their 20s to early 30s. Bottled Night has good sillage, draws complements, but has average to slightly above average longevity.

Boss Bottled Night isn’t a dark fragrance, as its name would suggest, instead you get a masculine floral. The composition is led by lavender and violet that is held together by a woody base.

It is on the softer airy side of the spectrum, but it has a definite warmth and unique aroma for a men’s cologne. Boss Bottled Night isn’t one for everybody, although it isn’t one that enjoys a dedicated following.  Bottled Night Review

Underrated Boss Fragrance for Men

Boss In Motion By Hugo Boss For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray 3 Ounces
– A very interesting cologne from Hugo Boss and one that I think has gone somewhat unappreciated. Boss in Motion is a citrus laden scent and orange is the main attraction.

This juicy citrus note is countered by a series of light and warm spices including from nutmeg, pink pepper, and cinnamon. It’s also got a woody base. Boss in Motion was released over 15 years ago, at this point in time, but it is still a solid cologne and has its own unique style.

The spice notes are never too heavy or intense but do provide a mixture of aromatic pairings which play off of that orange top note. This is a good casual scent for everyday wear, especially during a mild fall day, or at times in the early spring. Boss in Motion Review

Well, there you have it. These are the six absolute best men’s fragrances from Hugo Boss that have been released up to this point in time. The have a ton of scents and they don’t always stack up or perform well, but these cream of the crop colognes are a great place to start with the brand.

The Scent Private Accord by Hugo Boss

The Scent from Hugo Boss spun off a ton of flankers in a pretty short amount of time. Overall, the lineup was good, with some that were even better. Private Accord was brought out in 2018, to give a new interpretation of the maninka fruit-based The Scent DNA. What does this entry smell like? How long does it last? Is it even worth a try?

What does The Scent Private Accord Smell Like?

Notes include: ginger, maninka fruit, mocha, cocoa absolute, pepper, bergamot, patchouli, woods

My Full Review

Private Accord kicks things off with an immediate impact from the cacao note. It is very strong from the start and joined by the fresh spice of ginger. Ginger is one of my favorite spicy notes, so, I think the opening here is sort of awesome.

Underneath that is a further spiciness supplied by a dash of pepper. Along with, the usual fruitiness of this series, maninka fruit. However, in this one, you get some pineapple to go along with it.

I will say, that the maninka and fruitiness as a whole, is toned down in The Scent Private Accord when compared to the others.

Once it has settled somewhat, the spiciness subsides. Cacao will at first be joined by a coffee note. Think more 75% cacao, 25% coffee. Then, the coffee will mostly be replace by vanilla, with the gourmand aroma being held together by a nice patchouli note.

The dry down is probably my least favorite part of this fragrance. It becomes much drier with a powdery cacao smell. It’s a sweet and dry cologne, pretty distant from that early great freshness of spices and fruits.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Private Accord has good sillage. It will project itself around 6-8 feet from the wearer, at it’s peak. Strong, but ultimately hits the upper end of moderate for much of its wear. From then on, it will still have a nice scent bubble, but not permeate the room.

I get just over 8 hours of wear with Private Accord. It isn’t an elite scent, in this regard, but much better than some of the others in this series from Hugo Boss. I really had no issue with the performance from this one.

So, if you like the smell, you’ll at least get your money’s worth out of it.

Seasonally, stick to the autumn and winter. This is very much a colder weather wear and would kind of get gross in the heat. That sweet, spicy, warmth isn’t exactly built for the summer.

This one also skews toward younger guys. The chocolate and vanilla combination dominates, once the initial ginger spice burns off. Not strictly a teenager’s scent or anything, but Private Accord isn’t something formal.

It’s good casually or for the nightlife. Would for sure, want to wear this Hugo Boss out for an evening on the town versus whatever during the daytime.

Overall Impression of Private Accord

Overall, do I like this Hugo Boss scent? I think it’s a nice smelling fragrance overall. It does get a little too heavy on the cacao and vanilla, in the latter stages. That part isn’t bad, but it’s a noticeable step down.

The early stages with the ginger, pepper, and maninka fruit are worthwhile and ranks among the best in the series. There isn’t too much development, but the sweet powdery quality isn’t amazing to me.

I prefer The Scent Absolute from this series. Actually, I liked the original better also, it just had terrible performance. Private Accord at least has solid performance going for it, with a nice smell.

That being said, Private Accord is an above average to very good cologne. It might not be for everyone, as you’re going to have to really be into dry chocolatey gourmands. Not super sugary, but more of a warm powder.

The Scent Intense by Hugo Boss

The line of Hugo Boss fragrances released under “The Scent” banner, have had many incarnations over the past 5+ years. I’ve reviewed the original EDT on the site, but recently picked up the other offerings to try and complete the collection (I know, I’m late). Today’s entry is going to be of The Scent Intense. How does it smell? When should it be worn? Is it worth a try?

What does The Scent Intense by Boss Smell Like?

Notes include: ginger, cardamom, maninka fruit, leather, vanilla, lavender, wood

My Full Review

Before we get into my review, let’s see how Hugo Boss describes it: An irresistible fragrance, unforgettable like a savored seduction. Exquisite notes of spicy cardamom, exotic maninka fruit, vanilla and leather unfold over time for an intense experience.

The Scent Intense opens up with a much spicier aroma than does the original. Off the bat, there is a lot of ginger and cardamom. The ginger is amped up from the original The Scent and the cardamom is a newer addition.

It’s a nice change of pace and I do like the intensity of the spice in the opening. The maninka fruit is still present, but it is without its citrus pairing. The Scent Intense is much less of a fruity fragrance, than is the EDT.

The spicy top sticks around for a while, but Intense will quickly move into its leathery phase. Maninka, lavender, and leather are basically what is around for the middle act. To my nose, the ginger is gone, and the cardamom has weakened significantly.

Finally, the end game will mostly be vanilla and leather, along with the remaining maninka. I do like the combination of these notes, but I actually prefer the spicy opening act, to the vanilla and leather finish.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The Scent Intense does indeed open up with some power and the ability to project itself is actually really nice for a while. However, the overall sillage is pretty moderate, as the intensity drops pretty far once the spices have dissipated.

Nonetheless, it is much better than the completely weak EDT version. The longevity also goes for over 7 hours on my skin. It’s not completely beast mode, but very serviceable and useful for most purposes.

Seasonally, autumn through springtime like the original. It has a nice versatility, can be worn day or night, by a variety of age ranges and many different scenarios. The Scent Intense does have a sexy aroma, that should allow you to venture into the nightlife with confidence and appeal.

Overall Impressions of Boss The Scent Intense

Do I like this cologne? I do. In terms of smell, I actually do like the original a bit more. However, the performance here is actually pretty good, especially when put head to head with the dreadful performance of that original release.

While I like the leather and vanilla dry down, I wanted more of that initial freshness and spicy warmth that I got with the intense opening act. I enjoyed the cardamom and ginger mix, but it didn’t go on for long enough.

It seems like The Scent Intense is getting difficult to come across these days, since it was released back in 2017. It’s worth trying, if you can find it at a reasonable price. I don’t think that it’s an amazing fragrance, but it’s very good overall. If one liked the original, this one should have something to offer you.
