Royal Rose by Juicy Couture

Taking a break from the Tom Ford reviews for a minute, I wanted to do a write up on another Juicy Couture perfume sample that I received a while back, this one titled: Royal Rose. It was released in 2017 and with a name like that is obviously going to be centered around that famous flower. How does it perform? How do the other notes interact with the rose? Is it any good?

What does Juicy Couture Royal Rose Smell Like?

Notes include: rose, incense, suede, musk, heliotrope

My Full Review

Before we get into the review itself, let’s see what Juicy Couture has to say about this fragrance: Royal Rose evokes a mystical world of romance and enchantment. Sumptuous rose and heliotrope stir the spirit while suede and incense shroud the scent in luxury.

The opening of Royal Rose is a rather sharp blend of rose and heliotrope. The rose note comes off as sort of a bomb, in terms of how intense it is and the aroma has an oriental sort of flavor to it.

Meanwhile, there is the smoky incense, which serves to warm up the composition and clouds the floral notes, in its mist.

About 15 minutes in, I start to detect suede and more musk. This is where to rose tones down a bit and Royal Rose becomes smoother.

The strange thing about this Juicy Couture fragrance is that the rose which is in the name, gets weaker as the scent moves along, until its almost non-existent. You’ll eventually get lots on incense, musk, some heliotrope, and suede. Warm, smoky, earthy.

There really isn’t much development at all beyond that. The rose just really falls off of a cliff.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, the sillage of Royal Rose is actually quite strong. This one will only require a few sprays to be effective and can definitely take over a room. The performance is probably the best attribute of this perfume and better than many other Juicy scents.

The longevity is also really great, with at least 8-9 hours of solid wear, and some extra hours sitting closer to the skin.

Seasonally, this one should stick to the colder months of the year. It’s not going to be great to have on during the summertime or anything like that. It can be worn casually or dressed up.

If you go light, it might be office safe, but one must be easy with the sprayer. It’s not really a sexy or a scent that draws people in, so I wouldn’t call it all that versatile or crowd pleasing.

Overall Impressions of Royal Rose

Overall, do I like Royal Rose? Not really. The Juicy Couture scent just isn’t that good. It starts off powerfully and has good performance, which are its strengths.

However, it doesn’t have a really attractive scent, the rose kind of just goes away, and there’s way too much of a musky smokiness.

The thing is, that aspect isn’t even a great example of this sort of scent. It’s all kind of bland, while being in your face about it. A strange release from this brand which usually tries to go super ‘crowd pleasing’ with its perfumes.

I’m not sure where this fits in or who to recommend it to. It’s pretty niche, in its appeal. I’d say pass on it.

Update: This one has been discontinued, anyway. Unless you can find a bottle for dirt cheap, don’t bother getting a hold of Royal Rose.

Vert Boheme by Tom Ford

Today, we have another entry from the Tom Ford Private Blend collection, Vert Boheme. This one was released back in 2016 and is probably one of the brand’s lesser known fragrances. The question is, is Very Boheme an unknown gem or a perfume that is actually quite forgettable? How does it smell? Is it worth a try?

What does Vert Boheme Smell Like?

Notes include: Sicilian mandarin, violet leaf, magnolia, honeysuckle, galbanum, wood

My Full Wear Review

The opening of Vert Boheme is very green with a floral disposition and just a hint of mandarin to give it a citrus undertone. Galbanum is heavily present with violet leaf being its less intense pairing.

This pairing could easily go overboard, but stays relatively tame due to the introduction of honeysuckle and the aforementioned Sicilian mandarin.

It’s quite interesting, how Vert Boheme, walks the line between floral perfume and that outdoorsy green smell. The latter, is what it leans toward, but there are defined elements of both in here. It never strikes me as being too much of a bouquet, rather, it is cool and has a sort of mossy feel to it.

Vert Boheme is a very clean and fresh outdoorsy scent with a watery scent lurking in the background. The whole thing is pretty linear and what you smell 20 minutes in, is pretty much what I get for the rest of the wear.

However, it does have a woodier aroma as it dries down, and you get deep into its life cycle.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, the sillage of this Tom Ford fragrance is quite moderate. It isn’t super powerful at the start and then fade away. No, it is just consistently in this moderate range during the wear.

With the longevity, I get about 6-7 hours out of this one. Not great, but a solid performer. Still, once I get into this sort of price range, I do start to expect more than this.

Seasonally, I’d call it spring to early summer. It feels as if it’d be fine in a range of temperatures, except maybe toward the higher end of the spectrum.

The green and floral aspects bring to mind a spring garden or walking along the edge of the woods, and Vert Boheme really fits that mood.

It is a feminine perfume and I don’t think that I could wear this as a unisex fragrance. It’s not super girly or anything, but is reminiscent of ladies’ scents, and there’s nothing notably masculine about Vert Boheme.

It’s a casual to office wear scent, not anything sexy or that cries out to be worn at night, more of a simple and clean everyday fragrance. I wouldn’t expect much beyond that.

Overall Impressions of Vert Boheme

Overall do I like Vert Boheme? It’s okay. Nothing about it strikes me as particularly amazing. If you are in the market for a very green, slightly aquatic, and floral perfume; then, I guess this would be a good option to consider.

For a more mass appeal? Not really. It’s pretty niche, in terms of who it would appeal to. It smells just fine and has a refreshing character, but it’s nothing that’s crazy good.

Best Smelling Vanilla Scented Perfumes for Ladies

Vanilla is of course an insanely popular note to use in both men’s colognes, as well as, ladies’ perfumes. Why wouldn’t it be? It smells great and can add a gourmand sensibility to any fragrance, when done right. It seems to be almost hand picked for inclusion in a wintertime scent over any of the other seasons, though, it can also make an appearance with less ‘heavy’ perfumes.

In this post, I want to give a plethora of options for women who are looking for a new fragrance that is highlighted by vanilla as the main or one of the main notes.

What are the Best Vanilla Fragrances for Women?

Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille Eau De Parfum Spray for Women, 1.7 Ounce

As the French name suggests, this is a woody vanilla scent. Not completely candy-like sweetness, rather, it has smoky woods with an addition of a coconut note.

Up top and for much of the wear, you get a vanilla pairing with coconut, and hints of black licorice. I normally don’t much enjoy licorice in perfumes, but I think this one is actually nice, and not overpowering.

At the base, there is more creaminess from tonka bean, a smokiness from oud and almond, and further smoothness from sandalwood. Un Bois Vanille is a very nice addition to the list, from Serge Lutens, and gives you a something familiar yet almost entirely unique.

Creed Sublime Vanille Cologne Unisex 8.4 oz Eau De Parfum

So, let’s start out with this hyper-expensive entry from Creed. Sublime Vanille has one of, if not, the best vanilla notes that I have ever smelled in a fragrance. It’s fantastic. It’s sweet and creamy, mixed with tonka bean during the dry down period. Sublime Vanille opens with citrus notes, which gives it a nice orange creamsicle vibe.

A bit longer into the wear and the lemony aroma begins to fade quite a substantial amount. This gives rise to the light musk note, which will play a support role in this rather simple composition.

This Creed is soft and airy, good for a wide range of uses, for really anyone to wear.  Again, this one is a high end scent, but the vanilla doesn’t get much better (if at all) than what’s in here. Here is my full wear review.

Kenzo Amour by Kenzo

An affordable, soft and floral, vanilla based fragrance for ladies. Amour is vanilla flanked by frangipani, heliotrope, and cherry blossom. This one is a nice example of vanilla, but used in a somewhat unique way.

Not only do you get, some different floral ingredients, from the run of the mill, Kenzo Amour also features a warm, fluffy, rice note. The whole thing comes across as clean, inviting, with a bit of a fresh powdery finish (and smoky incense). Very nice performance and a versatile daily wear type of perfume.

Hypnotic Poison by Christian Dior for Women 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette Spray

A rather pricey designer fragrance but Hypnotic Poison is a beautiful and sexy fragrance for women by Dior. There are two other Hypnotic Poison variations by Dior and each one stands out on its own. Vanilla is highlighted with notes of apricot, coconut, and almond playing a supporting role.

Warm, complex. seductive. This is one sexy fragrance and includes notes of sandalwood, vanilla, musk, almonds, moss, and many more. There are many flankers from the Poison line of perfumes and this is the best of the bunch, in my opinion.

The vanilla and almond lead the way and offer a sweet, creamy, and nutty aroma. Sandalwood provides the main support, along with another sweet creamy note, in coconut. Hypnotic Poison is quite bold and will last all day on one’s skin, without any issue. This is a warm and enveloping scent, so, be careful with over-spraying at the office or such places.

TOM FORD Tobacco Vanille Eau de Parfum

One of the absolute classic presentations of a fully developed tobacco note, blended with sweet elements, like the namesake, vanilla. It’s warm and bold and extremely pleasant to wear. Tonka bean, dried fruits, and cacao join some spices to help round out the main tobacco/vanilla combination.

Tobacco Vanille is a unisex presentation by Tom Ford. It kicks off as quite a sweet aroma, with a spicy additional layer headed up by cinnamon. It’s very warm, with an emergent greenish tobacco note, dried fruits, and a delightful cacao. Quite powdery cacao, which plays well off the vanilla.

As it dries down, Tobacco Vanille becomes less sweet, but has an overall darker and heavier aroma to it. There is a resinous sap note here, which thickens up the whole experience. The thickness of the aroma, makes it ideal for the colder climates, but not so much once the temperatures rise.  Great performer, with elite longevity and sillage.  Tobacco Vanille Review

Yves Saint Laurent Eau De Parfum Spray for Women

The opening isn’t that great in my opinion but when the coffee note emerges to go along with the vanilla, Black Opium comes into its own. Black Opium has become a best seller in the world of fragrance, since its release some years back. Black Opium, as a name would seem like it would be a darker fragrance, but it is actually quite sweet.

It is led by coffee and vanilla, as its main notes, along with warm pink pepper and cedar. This is warm, sweet, and powerful but not for everyone. Sure, it has mass appeal, but some think that the sweetness is too much and the perfume can become too enveloping.

Very good performer and while downcast by the critics, this perfume seems to have found plenty of love from consumers. This is a good blended option for vanilla lovers, as it is quite present, but not just a pure bred vanilla scent. Black Opium Full Review

MONTALE Vanille Absolu Eau de Parfum Spray, 3.3 Fl Oz

A great under the radar vanilla fragrance, that can be tough to find, but well worth a try for its deliciously sweet scent. Yet, Vanille Absolu, also has a great little spicy punch from clove and cinnamon.

However, that spicy touch is fairly fleeting, and the vanilla here really does have a sugary quality to it. More closer to a candied-like vanilla scent, with some other undisclosed gourmand type of notes.

As it dries down, Montale’s Vanille Absolu, becomes creamier and woody. This gives the perfume a cozy and comforting vibe, to close things out. I wouldn’t pay top dollar for it, but this is a great pickup at a discount.

Vanilla Lace by Victoria’s Secret

A very simple and inexpensive take on vanilla. It got a rich  and sweet creaminess and a hint of musky undertone. Been a staple for a few decades, at this point.

Again, there’s nothing too complex about Vanilla Lace, it’s just a lower price option, from Victoria’s Secret. However, this is probably the best vanilla scent from their line, and really is a pure vanilla perfume. Maybe a bit more, candied/baked goods than, naturalistic vanilla…but still very attractive.

Van Cleef & Arpels Orchidee Vanille Women’s Edp Spray, 2.5 Ounce

A warm and sweet blend of vanilla, chocolate, and orchid. Light and feminine fragrance which screams classy and refined. This can be somewhat difficult to find, but it still around the web.

Orchidee Vanille opens with an orange burst, that is covered in vanilla. Somewhat, of a creamsicle-like aroma, that gives way to a tonka/chocolate/vanilla blend later on.

This Van Cleef & Arpels perfume, has a surprising amount of depth, for such a sweet gourmand. Yes, you are mainly getting the vanilla note. However, underneath that is contributions from almond, musk, tonka bean, orchid, and more. Each plays its part and has its time to shine. Really lovely scent.

Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise Cologne Spray

A vanilla perfume with a nice addition of anise, to give it a bit of a spicy edge. Quite a fresh take on the vanilla note and also quite expensive, if you can find a bottle of it.

J’adore in Joy by Christian Dior

It’s been a while since I’ve done a ladies’ perfume review, for a Christian Dior scent, so why not start now? Today’s entry is a 2017 release, a flanker fragrance to the J’adore line called, J’adore in Joy. What does this scent smell like? How does it perform? Is this a worthy addition to the best-selling J’adore name?

What does J’adore in Joy Smell Like?

Notes include: peach, ylang-ylang, jasmine, fleur de sel, neroli, tuberose

Click here to try: Dior J’adore In Joy Eau De Toilette Spray for Women, 3.4 Ounce

My Full Review

Before we get into my thoughts on this perfume, let’s see what the brand has to say about it: A solar floral with a unique fruity and salty trail. Essence of ylang-ylang from Madagascar, transformed in Grasse, and jasmine sambac are brightened with a refreshing Fleur de Sel note and bursting with juicy peach.

J’adore in Joy opens up with a salt note that gets paired with the ylang-ylang. The peach will be more prominent later on, but at first I get a salty flower blend with an underlying fruity sweetness.

It’s a rather unique aroma, that I haven’t really come across before in a perfume. Yes, I’ve had other salty fragrance, but those were oceanic in their character. This Dior perfume, is not that at all.

A few minute in, the floral combination is of jasmine and ylang-ylang, still salty. These notes together, give off a scent that is similar to a musk. However, the peach is growing in strength, but never comes across like you’d usually associate this ingredient.

J’adore in Joy has a cool, relaxed vibe, while also feeling like being in the sunshine. The fragrance is almost completely linear on my skin, but I still find it to be intriguing.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

It’s not too loud of a perfume. I can spray it on a shirt, put it about 3-5 feet away, and detect it. Outside of that, it’s won’t make it past that after 30 minutes or so. Not a bad thing, just don’t expect a complete beast with this one.

The longevity is also solid. I could get 6-8 hours from this one. Not spectacular, but worthwhile for this sort of fragrance.

Seasonally, I guess it’s better in warmer weather, but it doesn’t feel out of place in the winter. I feel like this one should be worn outdoors, or it at least, puts out that vibe.

However, you could obviously wear this to the office, semi-formally to formal, or just around casually. It is an elegant perfume, just not a stuffy one. Clean and refined, not a party time fragrance.

Overall Impression of J’adore In Joy

Do I like this perfume? Somewhat. I’m not crazy about it, but it does get points for being interesting, and not smelling bad.

The salt note is a nice addition, to a usual formula. With the floral notes, it can come across like musk, but I do get a distinct saltiness. Ylang-ylang, jasmine, peach, and salt. If that sounds nice, this will be something that you’ll want to try.

Personally, I don’t find it to be great. Overall, it is a good perfume. Pleasant enough and well put together.

Decadence Eau So Decadent by Marc Jacobs

Moving right along through my most recent perfume samples, I have an entry from Marc Jacobs’ line of Decadence fragrances, Eau So Decadent. This flanker to the original has been out for a while now, but how does it actually smell? Is the performance any good? Is this scent worth a try?

What does Decadence Eau So Decadent Smell Like?

Notes include: lily of the valley, raspberry, black currant, pear, amber, magnolia, ivy, jasmine

Click here to try: Marc Jacobs Decadence Eau So Decadent L 3.4 EDT SPRNEW

My Full Review

Eau So Decadent kicks off with its fruit blend of notes, along with a light touch of jasmine and magnolia, underneath. The main ingredient here, is the pear, which gives its usual light juiciness to the composition.

Raspberry and black currant aren’t heavy additions to the mix, but they do allow Eau So Decadent to have a sort of sour berry smell, for at least part of the time.

The next phase of this Marc Jacobs perfume for me, is more floral and greenish, yet still being under the control of the pear note. Ivy, magnolia, and to a lesser extent the jasmine, surround the pear note while the other fruits fade somewhat.

The biggest change comes with the lily of the valley, which amps up the floral/garden type of aroma. It comes across as being quite clean and attractive. It’s still sweet at this stage, but Eau So Decadent, is moving more away from that.

Finally, I am left with pear, lily, magnolia, and amber. The amber note really broke late, on my skin. Maybe I just couldn’t notice it underneath everything else, early on, but it really became a major player.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The sillage here, is light to moderate. It will project itself out from the skin about 4-5 feet, for a few hours, and then be more of a skin scent. This isn’t a huge or ‘fill up the room’ type of perfume, more of a light and clean, daily wear.

How long does it last? In the 6-8 hour range. The end of that range, it will be an airy skin scent. Very solid performance, but not elite, by any stretch.

This one will be a go-to in the spring and summer months. Pretty much moderate to warmer climates. It would feel out of place in the winter, but I don’t see why you couldn’t wear it, otherwise.

When should this be worn? This is a daily wear. It is safe for the office, casual, or even more formal events. It’s an attractive scent, but doesn’t have that nightlife vibe, or as a date night sort of perfume.

Overall Impression of Decadence Eau So Decadent

Do I like Decadence Eau So Decadent, overall? I do. I think this could be a good option for those who want a safe and versatile bet, for daily wear. Also, those who enjoyed the original Decadence, will like this. This is a bit sweeter and fruitier

Is it a special fragrance? Not really, it’s a good scent, though. Eau So Decadent is an affordable option for women, who want a fruity floral, with a bit of style. Maybe stay away, if you’re not into pear or lily of the valley. I enjoy this for what it is, give it a try.
