CH Men by Carolina Herrera

In this post, I would like to delve into a name, that I never got around to doing a review on. Well, apparently, this old name has a new formula and is basically a new cologne: CH Men by Carolina Herrera.

In this post, I want to explore what the notes are, how it smells, how it performs, when it should be worn, and if it is worth a purchase?

CH Men Overview

Notes include: violet leaves, grapefruit, cyclamen, saffron, cashmere, leather

My Full Review

So, right off of the bat, CH Men has been reformulated and isn’t the same scent as it was before. The ingredients have changed significantly and I will be reviewing this newer version.

The opening of CH Men I get plenty of saffron, violet, and grapefruit. It is fresh with a bright fruity sweetness and grassy notes, that sit underneath it all. It’s clean and has a pretty unique aroma, yet feels familiar, like the structure is similar to other colognes but the individual notes are different.

As it moves along, CH Men becomes more of a green floral with woody notes emerging from the base. I get  mostly cashmere and I think some sandalwood is in there, as well.

Violet leaf and saffron are still the two main notes that hit my nose, with the secondary layer consisting of green grassy notes and spice.

The floral note here is cyclamen, which I’m not too familiar with how that smells, but perhaps is what is providing that green aroma.

Finally, there is a leather and woody base. It is smooth and masculine and provides a nice balance with the saffron and violet leaf. The grapefruit, at this stage, is pretty much gone completely.

So, what you’re left with is a green freshness led by saffron and violet leaf, with leathery woods, and with floral notes.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, the sillage is pretty light with CH Men. This is definitely a candidate for over-spraying the hell out of it.

I would double up each side of the neck and possibly once more. That way, you might get a better performance from it.

The longevity isn’t great either, about 4-5 hours, of light sillage. Maybe you could squeeze out and extra hour or two with heavy spraying, but I wouldn’t expect much more than that.

Seasonally, it’s one that seemingly can be worn year round, and fit in just fine. It is attractive and office safe, with the ability to venture into the nightlife, just won’t be a bold beast performer.

CH Men is the type of scent that will get complements, if you can get it to perform up to par.

Overall Impressions of CH Men

Overall, do I like CH Men? The smell of it is really good. I’m already a fan of saffron and leather, but Carolina Herrera takes it in a new, and appealing direction with this new formulation.

The only issue that I have, is the performance. I wish that it was stronger and would last on my skin, but it doesn’t seem to want to.

If you can get a good price for a bottle, it might be worth just doubling or tripling the sprays, as the scent itself is quite enjoyable.

Prada L’Homme vs. Dior Homme (2011) Comparison

In today’s head to head fragrance comparison, I am going to take a closer look at to men’s fragrances that feature a leading iris note: Prada L’Homme vs. Dior Homme. Which of these popular designer scents, smells better? Which gives a better performance? Which is the better buy overall?

Opening

Prada L’Homme opens up with that fresh powdery floral scent, that is led by the iris note. It also is flanked by neroli and violet. This is all surrounded by amber, dotted with pepper, and on top of a cedar base.

Dior Homme opens up with its own floral blend of iris and lavender. However, it teams that up with a sweet cacao, citrus bergamot, and dry vetiver. With a smooth leather note, coming through.

Which is better? I lean toward the Dior. The Prada is very nice, simple, but smells great. I just think that the Dior’s use of cacao and citrus, give it a more complex, and better aroma.

Edge: Dior

Projection

Both of these fragrances are pretty moderate, in their sillage. Dior Homme might be slightly stronger, but it’s not much, and no significant enough to give an edge here.

Edge: Push

Longevity

I get 5-7 hours with Dior Homme. It’s mostly towards the 7 hours end. However, I can double spray the Dior and get 8-9 hours, and this is what I usually do with my bottle. Prada gives me 6-7 hours of wear, but the double spray really doesn’t add any time…go figure.

Edge: Dior (slightly)

Versatility

Another category that they really overlap. Both are good year round, outside of high heat and humidity. Both are office friendly, can go casual if need be, and have a refined style.

I personally think that Dior can venture better into the night life, as the cacao sweetness and leather notes, fit in more than the fresh powdery scent that Prada is.

Edge: Dior (slightly)

Overall Scent

These are two extremely evenly matched fragrances, and since they both are masculine iris-based floral colognes, that is to be expected. Ultimately though, which is the better scent? I’m going to have to go with Dior Homme. It’s my personal choice, the one I went with when buying a full bottle, and is the closest thing that I have to a daily wear.

I really do like Prada L’Homme, it’s a very nice scent, but a pretty straightforward cleanly fresh cologne. Non-offensive with decent performance. I would personally go with, Prada Intense, over this one if I were in the market for a Prada fragrance.

I think Dior is a much more interesting and better fragrance to wear. I love how it has the powdery iris, but that’s not all that it is. It can be dry and woodsy. Sweet. Smoothed by rich leather. Even having a touch of citrus, to set it apart. It’s not way better, but it’s my pick.

Ultra Male vs Invictus Comparison

Today, we have a head to head match up between two popular colognes, which are geared toward younger men: Invictus by Paco Rabanne vs. Ultra Male by JPG. Which one of these fragrances smells the best? Which gives a better performance? Ultimately, which is the better buy? Please continue below for my full take and experiences with both of these scents.

Opening

Invictus has an upbeat and youthful opening full of citrus that is very sweet and leans more towards being candied rather than a juicy fruit. The citrus is matched up with sea notes to help give Invictus a marine vibe that screams summertime.

Meanwhile, Ultra Male, is also candy-like in its opening. An intense blast of pear, vanilla, mint, and cinnamon. It is spicy yet sugary. Bolder, smoother, and doesn’t have the same powdered quality of the original Le Male.

Which is better? I have to give the nod to Ultra Male. It has more going on and I much prefer the spiced elements to that of Invictus’ sea notes.

Edge: Ultra Male

Projection

Invictus actually has really good sillage for the first hour or so on my skin. It’s not weak sauce at all, but it does quiet down into more of a moderate after that. Really good, but not great.

Ultra Male has huge sillage, I can spray it on a shirt, and smell it across the room from me. It is bold and an intense version of Le Male, which makes it an ideal wear for nights out at the bar or club. The Paco Rabanne puts up a good challenge, but doesn’t touch Ultra Male’s projection.

Edge: Ultra Male

Longevity

Again, Invictus is no slouch here, either. It’s not great, but I can get 6-7 hours out of it on my skin, which is enough for most purposes. Ultra Male routinely gets me 8-9 hours and can go longer, depending on the circumstances.

Edge: Ultra Male

Versatility

This is the category in which Invictus has the edge. It is more of a warm weather scent but it can be worn easily year round, while Ultra Male is reserved for the colder parts of the year. Invictus can also be worn more as a daily wear, since it isn’t as loud and bold, as Ultra is.

Both can be worn as nightlife scents, but Invictus just has the ability to spray it on more occasions.

Edge: Invictus

Overall Scent

Invictus is a nice cologne, especially for the younger set. It has an attractive smell, nice sweetness, and aquatic notes which help make it a good all around scent. It’s really sweet and versatile, so I can see why so many guys enjoy wearing it.

However, Ultra Male is just a better fragrance to me, even with its limited wear. It is like a weapon in your arsenal that you break out on certain days or nights. It works extremely well in a nightclub and gives a great performance, plus, a unique vibe. It is my favorite Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance, without a doubt.

Now, this doesn’t mean that it is the right choice for everyone. It is warmer and heavier than Invictus. If you want more of an all around everyday fragrance, Invictus would be a better choice. For me, I have other daily wears, and keep a full bottle of Ultra Male for the right night. It’s just more appealing to me.

Best Smelling Winter Colognes 2018-2019

While I personally don’t enjoy cold weather for the most part, I absolutely do love the winter season, for the fact that I get to wear some of the best fragrances. There are certain men’s colognes, that are simply fantastic, but really don’t work too well when the heat is out in full force. So, here we are again in this hemisphere, about to venture back into the depths of winter and I can officially break out the scents for freezing temperatures. Now, not every scent on this list is limited to cold weather, but some very much are. This is the time of year that we can wear the sweet gourmands, heavier spices, and bold enveloping scents that hang in the crisp air.

Paco Rabanne 1 Million Prive Eau de Parfum Spray for Men, 3.4 Ounce– When I wrote my initial review of Prive, I thought that this one would definitely be getting me complements and have a solid presence in a winter rotation. After wearing it time and time again for a year, I can confirm my theory. To me, this is the best of the 1 Million fragrances (and I like all of them), and the most mature. Prive has more of a smoky darkness underneath the obvious sweet heart and less of the in your face boldness of the original.

1 Million Prive opens with cinnamon spice and the familiar fruity appeal of crisp apple. It’s always kind of reminded me of cinnamon applesauce, in that regard. Then, notes of myrrh of tobacco are added, and I think that this is what separates this one from it’s Paco Rabanne brethren. The myrrh gives it a sort of exotic appeal and an added depth to the body. The dry down period I get the cinnamon note and the sweet tobacco, as the main attractions.

Prive isn’t a scent without any power, as I can get double digit hours of wear out of this one. I’m actually wearing 1 Million Prive, as I’m doing this post, so I definitely enjoy the stuff.

Angel Men Pure Malt by Thierry Mugler Eau De Toilette Spray (Limited Edition) for Men, 3.40 Ounce– Pure Malt is a very interesting and unique fragrance from Thierry Mugler’s Angel Men line. As the name suggests, this one has a very malted aroma. Warm boozy fruit notes, whiskey, peat, and vanilla create an enveloping aroma that targets the winter weather perfectly.

This is one for guys who want a very rich full bodied cologne and who enjoy the whiskey note, in particular. Pure Malt has great performance in terms of longevity and the sillage is very solid as well. It won’t be great outside of the colder months, but it is fantastic during these cold days and nights. Pure Malt Review

Dirty English Cologne 3.4 oz Eau De Toilette Spray Mens Dirty English is a men’s fragrance by Juicy Couture, that sort of still flies under the radar. That’s a good thing too, as finding a bottle for cheap is fairly easy, because not too many people know about it. This is a shame, Dirty English is great, and one that I keep a full bottle of for when the temperature drops outside.

I’m usually not super crazy about colognes with a really prominent oud note, but this one is blended so well off of the other ingredients, that I can’t help but love it. It’s a very woodsy cologne with cedar, sandalwood, cypress, and ebony wood. However, this is offset by a beautifully rich leather note. It is dark, warm, woody, with a nice bit of spice. Overall, Dirty English has a very dry profile though there are just enough citrus notes added to give it a certain layer of juiciness. I get very good performance from this one. Dirty English Review

Giorgio Armani Code Profumo EDP Spray for Men, 3.7 Ounce– Code Profumo is a more recent release by Armani. This scent is magnificent flanker to the original Armani Code and even better than that fantastic fragrance, in my opinion. Smooth, sexy, and warm this Armani cologne is a sure fire winner for the colder months of the year.

Code Profumo opens up with that familiar warmth of amber and this is paired with a smooth creamy tonka bean note. This one is sweet, especially at the start, but it does become much smoother and masculine as it dries down. There is a very slight zesty orange note and spices from both nutmeg and cardamom. All of this is wrapped up in rich leather. It ends up having a smooth, creamy, almost powdery aroma. The sillage while not monsterous, is quite good, and the longevity for this Armani scent is excellent. My Code Profumo Review

Carolina Herrera Ch Eau De Toilette Spray for Men, 3.4 Ounce
This is a beautiful fragrance by Carolina Herrera. It features notes of grapefruit, bergamot, nutmeg, jasmine, violet, leather, and amber. It is a sweetly sugary aroma with  vanilla and leather, which gives it  a rich and warm smoothness. The dry down is quite lovely.

However, the main attraction in CH Prive is the whiskey note, which creates a masculine and boozy air. The whiskey is there throughout the wear and pairs quite well with the leather, it’s got a similar vibe to Man in Black with the liquor/leather combo, but which much less spice. This one takes the whiskey in a much different direction than does the aforementioned Pure Malt.  The leather and whiskey are heavily featured in the dry down and are supported by the vanilla/tonka bean, mostly.

CH Prive is a sexy and masculine fragrance that is safe enough to be worn at the office, while also having a rightful place in the nightlife. CH Prive Review

Thierry Mugler Eau de Toilette Spray, Angel Men Pure Havane, 3.4 Ounce
Pure Havane is an amazing mixture of masculine sweetness featuring notes of tobacco leaf, honey, amber, and bitter cocoa. Havane is like a fine cigar dipped in honey and sugar with a helping of chocolate. Completely warm and gourmand and awesome. This is another cold weather winner from Thierry Mugler and the honey/tobacco blend really stand out perfectly against a frigid backdrop.

This is a really sweet cologne but the honey and cocoa notes make it different from many other sweet or fruity men’s scents. Pure Havane by Thierry Mugler Review

Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male for Men Intense Spray, Eau de Toilette, 4.2 Ounce

Ultra Male is one of the flanker fragrances that was spun off from the original best seller, Le Male. However, this is the one that has exceeded its predecessor, and just strikes me as better in every metric.

Ultra Male features notes of pear, cinnamon, mint, vanilla, and citrus. The opening is sweet and candy-like but settles into something that is both warm and smooth. This is a super fresh sweetness that has that slight spice given off my the cinnamon and mint combo.

With 1-3 sprays, Ultra Male isn’t overwhelming, and has very good projection. I always seem to get around 9 hours from my bottle. This is a great fragrance for the nightlife, as its spicy sweetness has a boldness, and an ability to hang in the air. One more thing to add, JPG has discontinued this from what I understand, so one would do well to pick up a large bottle from what’s still on shelves. Ultra Male Review

Bvlgari Man in Black Eau de Parfum Spray for Men, 3.4 Ounce– Man in Black has become an absolute go to cologne during the winter. It usually last between 4-6 hours, which while not great, is enough for the nightlife. It also starts off strong but becomes much quieter into the wear. What’s the deal then? This one while not universally loved, get highly complemented by a certain percentage of ladies. Like, this is one of those scents for me, that has gotten the most intense reactions and opinions about how sexy it smells. Again, not always the case, but when it lands its freaking lands big time.

So, while it’s not universally as popular as some of the other scents on this list, Bvlgari’s dark and boozy fragrance can do work when out in the field. It starts off with rum and cinnamon spices that is tempered by a smooth leather note. There is a oud base which amps up the masculinity and floral notes lingering around to give it a bit of sweetness. Again, it actually projects pretty moderately, but does the job when someone gets close to you. This isn’t one that I wear everyday, but on night’s when I head to the bar, it’s among my first selections. Man in Black Full Review

12 Best Perfumes for Women that Men Love 2018

Perfumes can add certain qualities and experiences to one’s life. The right perfume can express your style through one of the five senses and evoke certain feelings or memories within yourself or other people.

The following is our list of the 12 best perfumes for women that men love. I have chosen these perfumes based on their energy, seductive qualities, and overall beautiful scents.

The list has been updated for 2018 to add newer fragrances and take away others which no longer make the cut. I have included links to my full reviews where applicable and linked out each to its page on Amazon.

Ralph Lauren Romance Eau de Parfum Spray for Women, 3.4 Fluid Ounce
Elegant and sultry floral perfume that has an undeniably upbeat mood. Romance is very pretty and has a rose note that is aided by lily and calming chamomile. There is also a subtle spice provided by ginger. This is a timeless perfume that has been going for 20 years now and still has an attractive vibe that subtly catches attention. Great feminine fragrance. Notes include: fresh rose, ginger, marigold, violet, oakmoss and musk. Top Ralph Lauren Perfumes

Paco Rabanne Olympea Intense Eau De Parfum Spray 80ml/2.7oz– Olympea Intense opens up with a salty vanilla accord and orange blossom. It’s quite a bit like saltwater toffee and this sweet/salty mix is wrapped up in a warm amber embrace. It’s a very simple and linear perfume with some marine-like aroma, due to the salt note. This Paco Rabanne scent has great sillage and will last all day. It’s so smooth and delicious and one for the colder months of the year. Read my full Review

Lancome La Vie Est Belle Eau de Parfum Spray, 1.7 Ounce– The super beautiful and highly attractive perfume, that is consistently a best seller. La Vie Est Belle is very sweet and feminine with notes like vanilla and praline leading the way. Black currant and pear only serve to give it a syrupy sweetness and then there is the patchouli note which sort of ties it all together. Sure, it’s insanely popular but there is a reason for that, it smells very good. La Vie Est Belle is one for fall or winter and has the ability to last all day.

Victoria’s Secret Bombshell Eau de Parfum Spray for Women, 3.4 Ounce– Bombshell is the staple fragrance of the Victoria’s Secret line and it so very alluring. It’s got juicy fruits that help its appeal from pineapple to passion fruit to strawberry. Bombshell is delicious and fresh with a little bit of a soapy vibe to it and floral notes such as peony. This is a fresh and upbeat perfume, it’s more attractive or pretty, than it is sexy but as a guy…I find it quite charming.

Yves Saint Laurent Eau De Parfum Spray for Women, Black Opium, 3 Ounce Black Opium has sort of become a go to fragrance since its release as a flanker fragrance to the original and classic Opium. It’s another sweet scent, paring coffee and vanilla, and this duo performs amazingly well together. This YSL isn’t really all that ‘dark’, but it is warm and has the mild spice that is found with pink pepper, which is prominent in this composition. Black Opium has a strong sillage and the versatility to be worn as a daily scent or on a date, because it does have that sweet draw. I have a feeling this one will be best seller status for a long while.

Diesel Loverdose Red Kiss Eau de Parfum, 1.7 Ounce– Red Kiss is a gourmand perfume that opens up with black currant, hazelnut, and orange blossom. It’s sweet with a citrus kick and some nuttiness from the hazelnut note. Later cacao only adds to the sweetness while the tart black currant takes a back seat. With a name like Loverdose Red Kiss, you can bet that this one is sexy, and draws men in. It’s creamy sweetness sits beautifully in cold weather and is very seductive. Red Kiss Full Review

Hypnotic Poison by Christian Dior for Women 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette Spray
A rather pricey designer fragrance but Hypnotic Poison is a beautiful and sexy fragrance for women by Dior. There are two other Hypnotic Poison variations by Dior and each one stands out on its own. This one, however, is still the top dog out of them all. Vanilla, bitter almond, and sandalwood help to lead the way in a layered and rich composition.

Hypnotic Poison is bold and versatile, with a very sensual aroma. There is a warm and sort of powdery feel to it, although it does have enough sweetness complements of the vanilla and coconut. When it dries down, the vanilla wins out, and is supported by musk and some white floral notes such as jasmine. This is great stuff and has been going strong for about 20 years now.  Our top fragrance selections from Chrisitan Dior

Gucci Women’s Gucci Premiere Eau de Parfum Natural Spray, 2.5 fl. oz. – This Italian design house makes some very sexy fragrances for both men and women. Orange Blossom, bergamot, musk, and white flowers gives this fragrance a warm and sensual aroma that doesn’t overpower. Notes include: Orange Blossom, Bergamot, Leather, Wood, Musk And White Flowers.

Guess by Marciano 3.4oz 100ml EDP Spray– Guess Marciano is an underrated perfume in my opinion. It definitely has a classic style while including some notes such as star fruit and orange liquor to give it a unique fragrance. Plus, it can be had for under $20 in a lot of cases.

It obviously has a boozy profile, but a fruity/tropical one. The curacao, grapefruit, and star fruit combination really start things off right and upbeat. It’s sweet yet warm with a creamy vanilla note and a hint of spice provided by the cardamom. Guess has very nice longevity and the sillage is moderate, but by no means weak. The initial fruity notes take a back seat as it moves forward and white floral notes emerge to give it some very nice depth. Guess by Marciano is unique, seductive, but low key. Notes include: Curacao Orange liquor, Star Fruit, Cardamom seed, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Peony, Woody Notes, Vanilla, Dulce de Leche, Honeysuckle

Acqua Di Gioia by Giorgio Armani Eau De Parfum Spray for Women, 1.70-Ounce
Acqua Di Gioia is a very crisp and refreshing fragrance that is led by citrus notes and a cool mint note. This Armani scent has a mojito-like sweetness, that really reminds me of a feminine version of Guerlain Homme. This perfume is very versatile, almost an aquatic, but doesn’t just get limited to the summer months. Acqua Di Gioia can shine year round and fit occasions from casual to the office.

It is fresh and light with peony and jasmine sitting underneath the lemony and minty surface. All around a pleasant wear that smells delicious and well-blended. This is a simple scent that is highly attractive without being overbearing.
