Top 20 Best Selling Men’s Colognes 2023

When shopping for a new cologne either for yourself or as a gift for someone else, a good place to start is by seeking out a list of the best selling colognes, in order to find something which already has a broad base of support. After all, if they’re are best sellers then they ought to smell at least somewhat good, right? Here is my updated page, keeping track of these fragrances.

How I assembled this List

I went through dozens of online retailers websites from around the globe, creating top 20 lists from their stock, sorting by top sellers.

Obviously, I don’t have sales data for each fragrance, so a lot of this is guess work and seeing repeating patterns. Plus, I do have lots of search information with this website in particular, that helps me have a deeper understanding of the market.

Also, there is the limitation based on what the criteria for each retailer’s sorting mechanism is. Is the top seller sorting based on sales from the past day or how many months back?

I also used dozens of websites in different regions, as some places like Sephora only carry certain brands. I chose sites from among discounters, mid-range retail shops, and high-end department stores. That way, there’s plenty of variety.

It’s not perfect, but this top 20 list is a pretty good representation of the top of the top sellers.

The only fragrance that I know for sure is the top seller in the world is Sauvage. LVMH has stated that to be a fact. That’s only because it is the first men’s fragrance to outsell all other women’s fragrances too.

There is a ton of overlap across sites, which is what gives me the top 20. But, I’ll share some fragrances here that were best sellers in their particular market space, that don’t make the main list.

At the discounter level, these colognes are still very popular:

In the UK and EU, there are some scents that hit the top 20 sellers in those regions, but not in the US…including:

Now, the main list is strictly men’s colognes. Here are some of the top-selling unisex perfumes:

  • Santal 33
  • Another 13
  • Myrrh and Tonka
  • Baccarat Rouge 540

20 Best Selling Men’s Fragrances

Again, outside of the top spot, this isn’t really going to be in complete order. The second through the fifth or sixth spot, is probably pretty correct, but not necessarily in order. After that, there isn’t a ranking really, just colognes that make the cut.

I’ve combined many of the EDP, EDT, Parfum flankers into one main entry for these fragrances. That way it’s not just a repeating list of variations of the same colognes. So, it’s actually going to be more than 20 options.

Sauvage– The number one spot and a scent that is pretty ubiquitous at this point. The original EDT still gathers a lot of sales. However, the Eau de Parfum and Elixir versions are also consistently topping retailer bestsellers. So much so, that they’re just getting combined into this one spot on the list.

Elixir takes the Sauvage name in its own direction, still tied to the formulation in some ways, but smelling quite unique. The EDP is the best of the original set of flankers, in my opinion. I would go with that one versus the EDT any day of the week.

Bleu de Chanel– Bleu de Chanel doesn’t appear like it will ever lose its spot on this list. It’s tough to tell which version is the best seller, at this point, but I think it might be the EDP.

All of them are great in their own ways. The citrus and amber and spicy mix has become a staple. Clean and still beautiful to wear after all of these years. Very much worth a spot in anyone’s collection.

Eros– The Eros line is still going strong. I used to really love the initial release, among my old favorites. However, to me the lemon note in the EDT has gotten way more pronounced and it doesn’t smell the same, in my opinion. Plus, it’s not as powerful and long-lasting.

The original batches had a great blend of mint, vanilla, lemon, etc. It was fantastic. I’ve tried multiple minis and samples and never recapture that original magic. Though, it’s still worth it among the popular designer colognes, not to make it sound as if I hate Eros…I don’t.

The EDP, Parfum, and Flame have become top sellers themselves in various regions.

Aventus– Through no fault of its own (other than being a great fragrance), Creed Aventus has just become annoying to talk about.

The massive popularity has spawned dozens of knock offs and other colognes trying to steal elements of its style. The industry sure knows how to beat a trend to death. Nonetheless, the original remains a best seller even with its lofty price.

Y EDP– Well, the Y line is represented mostly by the EDP version. It is pretty much a bestseller across every website that features it. Y Le Parfum, has also crept up and is routinely in that 10-20 range, so it’s getting combined into one entry.

I have a bottle of EDP, that I do still wear. I was higher on this fragrance when it came out, but don’t enjoy it quite as often in my rotation. Le Parfum is actually a lot of people’s favorite from the line. I like it, though, it never was really my thing.

Acqua Di Gio By Giorgio Armani For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray 6.7 Ounces
Chances are that you’ve smelled this wildly popular cologne before, even if you didn’t know about it. Acqua di Gio is a fantastic scent that is always among the top sellers.

The citrus, the sea notes, the florals. It’s such a balanced and well done fragrance. It’s easy to forget about as it’s been a staple for over 25 years now.

I grabbed samples of this a year or two ago to see how it still performed. The scent is still the great aroma, that I remember. The longevity has taken a hit. Now, it’s around 5-6 hours. Not amazing, but AdG is usually available at a fairly affordable price. Acqua Di Gio Review

Paco Rabanne 1 Million By Paco Rabanne For Men Edt Spray, 3.4 Ounce– Another men’s fragrance that has been an extremely popular option for well over a decade. 1 Million still has a spot on the list, even if it’s not higher ranked, like it probably used to be.

The newer bottles don’t seem to be as powerful or as long lasting, as the original batches were. Nevertheless, it still is like 85% of what it once was.

The leather, rose, and citrus opening create a sweetish ‘grape bubble gum’ sort of aroma. This is mixed with spices and an enveloping warmth. The dry down is less of the sweet, more of the leathery amber and spice blend. I’m still a fan, even if it’s no longer a part of my rotation. 1 Million Review

1 Million Elixir– 1 Million Elixir was more of a surprise to me. I hadn’t realized how popular this flanker had become. But, it was consistently running near the top of websites from the USA and EU. We’ll see how long it lasts, but for 2023 it makes the cut.

It opens up with a crisp fruity kick of green apple. The blend underneath is a Damask rose, osmanthus, and davana. The rose is a lighter and sweeter variety. The dry down is mostly about the vanilla and tonka bean with everything else playing a bit role.

I enjoyed this one. It’s actually one of the better flankers from the 1 Million line, so maybe it will have some staying power. 1 Million Elixir review

Profondo– Another AdG fragrance and I’ll give this one it’s own spot on the list. This one is popular worldwide, but Profumo is up there in popularity in Europe.

This version is aquatic, fresh, and woody with a nice citrus opening act. Doesn’t have the smokiness of Profumo and is less of a salty sort of marine accord. Good balance and performer. Profondo Review

Dylan Blue– I get the popularity for this one. It’s not my favorite, by any stretch, but the opening has been something that I’ve enjoyed from time to time.

It is interesting that Dylan Blue Pour Homme is still the only men’s release from this line, even with immense and steady sales. The women’s line now stands at three fragrances.

Still, this is a nice option for younger guys who don’t want to overthink things.

The One by Dolce & Gabbana– This is one of my favorite colognes. Most people’s only gripe, is that it doesn’t last long enough. For me, if I spray enough, the longevity is fine (Eau de Parfum). But, you will have to spray more than you usually do with other fragrances.

The warmth, tobacco, sweetness, and spicy elements are all so fantastic. Get the EDP version, because the longevity of the EDT is actually terrible, and there’s no getting past it no matter how much you spray.

I’m glad I picked up another full bottle last year. Notes include: coriander, grapefruit, tobacco, cedar, orange blossom, and ginger among others. The One EDP Review

Versace Pour Homme (Signature)– This Versace scent is fairly unique in its composition of notes. It’s a blend of woodsy and floral scents such as jasmine and kashmir wood that make it a fragrance that stands out.

It’s still chugging along it seems. This was one of the colognes which was on the original 2014 era list. People stiil love it. Versace Review

versace pour homme

Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana– Another great choice in the casual cologne market. Light Blue is a highly popular choice for both men and women for good reason, it’s light, subtle, and smells fantastic.

Light Blue is such an easy first cologne, as it is super versatile, and checks a lot of boxes as to what you’d want in a fragrance.

Eau Intense has especially gained in popularity over the years, too. I saw it pop up as a top seller across multiple sites. However, the original is still the higher ranked of the two. Even if Eau Intense is actually better. Light Blue Review

Gucci Guilty– Guilty is another one that has spawned almost countless iterations over the past decade-plus. The original EDT is still a very nice wear and fairly unique while being mass appealing.

A balanced lemon, pink pepper, and lavender note start things off. It’s a lighter cologne, floral with further touches of neroli and orange blossom. A bit sweet, somewhat woody, and overall pretty linear with its presentation.

Guilty EDT is extremely versatile and an easy all-around fragrance to start a collection with.

Born in Roma– I don’t get why this one has become so popular, maybe its comparisons. The series as a whole is kind of meh, but apparently sells better than the previous Valentino Uomo line that it sort of replaced as the flagship. Even though, that had way more beautiful colognes.

To me, it’s mid. The whole series just doesn’t do much to get me interested. This one in particular isn’t anything special. It has a strong resemblance to Invictus, but I think I like the Paco Rabanne more.

It does have it’s own soapier personality in the dry down. Even then, the mineral accord and violet leaf aren’t my favorite notes. Born in Roma review

Phantom– Another Paco Rabanne, another scent that I don’t much care for. Phantom has a nice enough start, but isn’t really great overall. Maybe people really like the bottle?

The start is a lemon zest, with a juicy and somewhat tropical undertone. It smells like a pineapple or maybe even a touch of mango. That is a brief experience. Then, it becomes a lavender dominated scent with earthy, woody, and herbal notes. Phantom Review

Invictus by Paco Rabanne–  The sweet and youthful Invictus is perpetually among the top sellers in this past decade. It has spawned a ton of flanker fragrances to boot.

Invictus Victory is the most popular at the moment and is another cologne that I combined with its parent into one entry.

Victory smells more like the Pure XS line that Paco Rabanne came out with versus being another Invictus flanker. It’s sweet and boozy. The vanilla and amber notes really come through well in the dry down, almost producing a blend of chocolate and vanilla aromas.

Luna Rossa Ocean– A lot of the Prada Luna Rossa fragrances are in the mix. The newer Ocean appears to have secured a spot in the top 20, though.

This one is a mixed bag. I loved the opening act. I wish that they could have captured that and made it last for 8 hours. The problem is, it is short-lived and the back half of the fragrance while smelling nice, is very weak.

Suede, caramel, and tonka bean with a fresh bergamot citrus was a great idea. The rest of the execution, eh…Luna Rossa Ocean Review

Le Male Le Parfum– Following in the footsteps of the original Le Male and Ultra Male, Le Parfum is now the premier option from Gaultier.

Very nice with the appealing DNA of the original Le Male, especially coming from the lavender in the beginning. This is sort of an updated version of the classic.

It also gives you hints of Ultra Male, without the same powerful sillage (though, performance is still very good). Very warm with spicy punches throughout and wrapped up in that familiar JPG vanilla note.

The Most Wanted Parfum– From ‘The Wanted’ line The Most Wanted Parfum is now the best seller on most sites. I cannot really disagree with the demand for this cologne, as it is one of the two best from the series. The other is The Most Wanted EDP.

The opening ginger note is absolute fire. I love that spicy kick and the sweet toffee dry down is also great. Not very complicated scent, but a very good one all around.

212 VIP Men by Carolina Herrera

Maybe I just haven’t been paying enough attention but I think that Carolina Herrera fragrances are criminally underrated. I have yet to come across a scent from this house that I didn’t at least like a bit.

There aren’t too many designers that I can say that about. Recently, I bought a full bottle of 212 VIP, which seemed right up my alley based on the notes and the description of the cologne.

How does this one rate? What does it smell like? Does it have good longevity? Keep reading below for my full thoughts and reaction on 212 VIP for men.

212 VIP Herrera

My Full Review

The opening of 212 VIP for men starts with a smooth yet spicy blast of the vodka, tonka bean, amber, and pepper notes. Supporting roles come into play from the mint and lime which while not prominent, I think gives VIP a little extra something unique. It has a fizziness from gin, that really allows for it to develop that alcoholic drink personality, up top.

Once the initial spray passes, the passionfruit and lime, bring a fruity sharpness to 212 VIP Men. It has a very citrus appeal, with a refreshing spice, and comes together as a crisp/cold beverage.

After the initial stages, the sweetness of the tonka provides the slight vanilla aroma that blends well with the warmth of the amber. It sort of reminds me of The One by D&G in this regard, yet, these are wholly different scents.

Now, with the vodka note this does have that boozy feel to it, which is perfect for the nightlife…and it’s designed to be that way. As it dries down, I do sense more of the ginger as the spice and less of the original pepper from the opening which allows VIP to take on a different vibe.

I would say that the cologne definitely gets better as time wears on. 212 VIP softens up from the more intense opening but still retains its alluring sexiness.

The base notes of leather and wood, aren’t that strong here. You can pick them up hours into it, but they never really overtake the main ingredients.

Sillage, Longevity, and When to Wear

Projection wise, this stuff is great. A couple sprays were enough to have it be very noticeable without going into the realm of being too much.

It’s a loud and confident kind of fragrance. I get really good longevity out of this too, 8+ hours seems to be no problem thus far…so you do get some bang for your buck.

Update: The sillage on this, is really strong. 212 VIP can be a monster, so spray lightly. Once I grabbed a full bottle of this stuff, the projection absolutely dominates a room.

Update 2: I’m basing all of this on the original bottles, I’m not sure if it’s taken a step back.

It does settle some, but is well above average for the rest of the way until VIP is done. It will routinely get me over 10 hours of wear, sometimes less, but it does its job well.

This is cold weather performer. I’ll be wearing this a lot during the wintertime, as it seems I’m always finding great scents to wear during this time of the year.

This isn’t so much a casual fragrance. I mean, one or two sprays will probably be okay while at work but 212 VIP is built for nights out.

This is a club/bar banger, much like 1 Million but I’m finding VIP, to be the more mature and interesting of the two. Yes, this is a sexy, date night, lady attraction kind of cologne and I will be wearing it as such.

Really, outside of the club/bar scene, this fragrance hasn’t had much application for me. The strength and booziness can be prohibitive, in that regard, and it isn’t able to stray much outside of its niche.

Overall Impression of 212 VIP

Overall, do I think 212 VIP is worth a buy? Yes! I bought my bottle and am very glad that I did. It’s great across the board. It smells really good, it lasts a long time, it isn’t weak, and it’s amazing for nightlife.

Now, I do love a lot of scents that have that sweet tonka, warm ambery, boozy kind of feel to it…so, if that’s not your thing, you should probably go with something else. However, if you want a cold weather cologne that doesn’t let you down, I would strongly consider 212 VIP.

Update: This is still my favorite from the 212 line. I no longer have my full bottle, yet this is one I would want to wear every once in a while. If the price is right this can still be worth it.

Again, this stuff is powerful, and the vodka/gin is an integral part of its composition. You should consider it, if you’re younger and still involved in the bar/club scent. Outside of that, it probably won’t be much use to you.

Midnight Romance by Ralph Lauren

Getting back into the fragrance reviews, I want to do another one in the world of female fragrances. This is a more recent addition to the Ralph Lauren family, released in 2014, and a flanker to the original Romance.

Midnight Romance is of the fruity/floral variety of perfumes and I was interested to see how this one performs. As usual, I am going to cover how it smells, projects, how long it lasts, when it should be worn, and whether or not I think that it is worth a purchase.

What Does Midnight Romance Smell Like?

My Full Review

The opening blast of this EDP is a bright and colorful mix of mostly the raspberry and vanilla notes. The vanilla gives it a slight creaminess, which I think adds character to this fragrance. Yes, it’s a pretty common paring of ingredients, but I do like how Ralph Lauren presents it here.

The floral notes (mostly, iris) begin to come on about 10 minutes in, in my experience, and settles it down from becoming too much of a sweet candy-like perfume, but one that does still retain that sugary essence.

What I really like about this perfume, is that, it is a playful kind of aroma that doesn’t feel lifeless and dull to me. The raspberry creates a juicy profile, that would work for casual days, as well as romantic encounters.

Midnight Romance doesn’t get too complex but I think that for what it is, it works very well.

As Midnight Romance dries down, the peony begins to overtake the iris note, and creates a fuller floral accord. It’s a nice balance, less powdery, and the perfume becomes more of a floral/fruity perfume, than it had been prior.

The vanilla note, fades quite a bit during the latter stages of the wear. It’s still pretty easy to detect, it’s just that initial raspberry and vanilla combo, doesn’t have the same power.

So, up top you get a juicy and sweet aroma, that transitions into a sweet floral. In the end, I pick up peony, iris, raspberry, vanilla, and other assorted floral notes. Nothing too complex, but a fairly well-balanced fragrance.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The projection for this scent is pretty moderate. Honestly, it’s pretty good in that regard, not overbearing but not really a skin scent either. You’ll know it’s there but you definitely don’t need to overdo the sprays.

In terms of longevity, I seem to get it to last in the 6-8 hour range, which is good enough for most purposes. Though, you may need to reapply in case you need a marathon wear for one day.

Midnight Romance strikes me as more of a spring scent and I really like it in the warm weather. However, I haven’t tested it in the high heat, so I’m not too sure how it’ll hold up in those temperatures.

I feel like this would be, a solid all around scent for either school or office, but still sexy enough to use on a date. It is pretty damn appealing to my nose, as a guy.

I really don’t get what the ‘Midnight’ name comes from, it’s not a dark or really a nighttime scent. It actually leans the other way.

Overall Impressions of Midnight Romance

Overall, is Midnight Romance worth a buy? I think so. It isn’t the most amazing scent ever but it seems to do almost everything well. The scent is attractive, it lasts, it projects, and it’s versatile. It’s not my favorite from the Romance line, though, it’s near the top.

You might want to avoid if you’re not a fan of raspberry or peony scents, but if that’s your thing, then this Ralph Lauren perfume could be a great bet.

I like the raspberry and vanilla opening act. It’s sweet and has a great creamy finish. The iris and peony are fine, but I enjoy that opening act. The raspberry keeps me involved here.

The performance is above average too. If there’s discount bottles floating around now, that could make this a value play.

It’s honestly pretty solid all around, so, if it sounds appealing this could easily be a daily wear. The versatility and balance, makes Midnight Romance, a good pickup at the right price.

Le Bateleur 1 by Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana released it so-called Anthology series of fragrances a few years ago and I have already reviewed two of these colognes on this site already (La Force, Le Fou). In all honesty, this line of scents has been quite disappointing.

Not that they are horrible fragrances by any means, it just seems that they are all sort of bland and/or weak in their longevity and projection. In this post, I want to take a closer look at Le Bateleur 1 from D&G.

What does La Bateleur 1 Smell Like?

FullSizeRender (45)

Notes include: coriander, juniper berries, cardamom, cedar, vetiver, and birch

My Full Wear Review

Upon the first spray, I noticed an aquatic quality to this and definitely the juniper berries. That’s what the opening is mostly consisting of in my opinion, water and juniper. It’s nice and has an earthy and woodsy fragrance to it sitting underneath that main accord.

This is a woodsy aquatic, versus the usual fruity or oceanic type of scent. That’s good, if you’re looking for a change of pace.

After a while, it does seem to shift a bit more into the woodsy feeling than being strictly an aquatic with berries. Cedar and birch are the woody notes early on. Then, the dry down will be more about cedar and vetiver.

The final dry down is a cold and fresh woody fragrance. Still quite aquatic, but no

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Sillage wise, it’s below average. The opening act isn’t too bad and it reaches a moderate status during that part. However, for most of the wear, I forgot that I was even still wearing La Bateleur.

If I pressed my nose close to the skin, I could detect it. But, outside of that, not really.

Longevity wise, it isn’t that great. Maybe 4 hours on my skin. It’s quite subpar with how it performs. If it had more of a boost in this department, I would be more enthusiastic about adding this one to the collection.

It is a fresh smell that is slightly masculine but could pull off a unisex application. It’s not heavy and animalistic, just a clean woodsy and sometimes hard to pin down scent.

That’s the strength of this scent. You can pretty much wear it whenever and it wouldn’t be that bad of a choice. I would skip nightlife or if you’d want to draw complements. It doesn’t really stand out.

Overall Impressions

Like the rest of the Anthology series (save for L’Imperatrice 3), I feel that this cologne isn’t really anything that special. I definitely like it but not as much as Le Fou 21 or any of the plethora of great fragrance options that I have.

It seems to me that all of the fragrances in this series have plenty of positive qualities, however, none are complete. It’s like they are all missing one ingredient are quality that would tie them together and make them good performers.

Do I recommend it? Not really. It’s a nice scent but I couldn’t justify buying a whole bottle for myself. Give the sample size a try and see if it works for you. It’s not one that even smells terrible, it’s just completely forgettable.

Update: This one came out in 2009, was never popular, and isn’t really around much anymore. Getting a bottle now, would probably be too expensive to even be worth it. So, unless you do get a sub-30 dollar bottle, don’t even worry about this.

Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin

I received a bunch of cologne samples from Fragrancenet.com yesterday and as such there should be a flood of new fragrance reviews on this site. The first one I’m going to serve up is Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin. Lolita Lempicka is an extremely popular perfume for women and this is the men’s take on it.  So, without further introductory statements let’s just right into it here.

What does Lempicka Au Masulin Smell Like?

IMG_0245

Notes include: licorice, basil, wormwood, ivy, vanilla, violet, rum, tonka bean, sandalwood, praline, cedar, labdanum

My Full Review

The opening note is almost wholly dominated by the licorice note and if that’s not your thing then you may not like it. Usually, I’m indifferent towards the smell of licorice but it kind of became too much for me with Lolita Lempicka.

After about ten minutes or so the licorice gets muted a bit and the scent adds a layer of sweetness to it with the vanilla and makes the scent a whole lot more palatable.

Anise is also heavily present up top, along with wormwood and a general booziness from a touch of rum. The wormwood, anise, and licorice give it the absinthe aroma. So, absinthe and rum.

At this point the cologne is light, fresh, and warm plus utterly sweet. That might be my issue with this fragrance, it is too sweet for my tastes, which I usually enjoy.

The praline is the next in line for the gourmand side of things.. The licorice does tone down and this one becomes a fresher and powdery blend. Violet, which is hidden up top comes out along with the anise/basil spice and the woodier base notes.

That’s the ending for me. A fresh and spicy powder, surrounded by a whole lot of sweet.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The opening sprays here do pack a punch. Au Masculin hangs in the air, leaves a pretty far reaching trail in one’s wake.

But, it will gradually get lighter and lighter. The last few hours are a skin scent, consisting mostly of the woody notes. It’s still around, just not to a massive degree.

How long does it stick around? Somewhere around the 8-ish hour mark. It’s actually pretty darn good at this price point. Not a complete marathon runner fragrance, but it’s never quit too early for me.

Seasonally, you need to think colder to moderate temperatures. As such, I’d keep this Lolita Lempicka to autumn through early springtime. If it gets too warm, this one becomes pretty gross, in my opinion.

This is a youthful cologne, better for more casual use. It’s not one for formality or even school, with its absinthe and anise. The dry down fits in better, but I’d still go with something else for anything semi-formal and beyond.

Overall Impressions

I don’t hate this fragrance, though, I don’t particularly like it very much either. It’s just perhaps a bit too girly or sweet to make it something that I would wear all the time or on a semi-regular basis.

It has a candy-like profile but doesn’t have the same effect as a cologne of similar make up, such as Kouros Body. It gets compared to that other 2000 release in terms of style, but the YSL is much better.

On the plus side, it’s inexpensive, light, and is definitely a fragrance that is attractive to a lot of people. I am just not blown away by it and wasn’t feeling it in terms of my style. Wasn’t the worst sample size I got with this round, but it wasn’t the best either.

Update: Au Masculin seems to be discontinued. Bottles are now super expensive from what I’m seeing…aka not worth it. L’Heure Verte by Kilian is a lot like this one, but more tolerable. Less of the sweetness, more of the absinthe-like aroma. I would try that out, before grabbing Au Masculin.
