Midnight Romance by Ralph Lauren

Getting back into the fragrance reviews, I want to do another one in the world of female fragrances. This is a more recent addition to the Ralph Lauren family, released in 2014, and a flanker to the original Romance. Midnight Romance is of the fruity/floral variety of perfumes and I was interested to see how this one performs. As usual, I am going to cover how it smells, projects, how long it lasts, when it should be worn, and whether or not I think that it is worth a purchase.

My Full Review

The opening blast of this EDP is a bright and colorful mix of mostly the raspberry and vanilla notes. The vanilla gives it a slight creaminess, which I think adds character to this fragrance. Yes, it’s a pretty common paring of ingredients, but I do like how Ralph Lauren presents it here.

The floral notes (mostly, iris) begin to come on about 10 minutes in, in my experience, and settles it down from becoming too much of a sweet candy-like perfume, but one that does still retain that sugary essence.

What I really like about this perfume, is that, it is a playful kind of aroma that doesn’t feel lifeless and dull to me. The raspberry creates a juicy profile, that would work for casual days, as well as romantic encounters.

Midnight Romance doesn’t get too complex but I think that for what it is, it works very well.

As Midnight Romance dries down, the peony begins to overtake the iris note, and creates a fuller floral accord. It’s a nice balance, less powdery, and the perfume becomes more of a floral/fruity perfume, than it had been prior.

The vanilla note, fades quite a bit during the latter stages of the wear. It’s still pretty easy to detect, it’s just that initial raspberry and vanilla combo, doesn’t have the same power.

So, up top you get a juicy and sweet aroma, that transitions into a sweet floral. In the end, I pick up peony, iris, raspberry, vanilla, and other assorted floral notes. Nothing too complex, but a fairly well-balanced fragrance.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The projection for this scent is pretty moderate. Honestly, it’s pretty good in that regard, not overbearing but not really a skin scent either. You’ll know it’s there but you definitely don’t need to overdo the sprays.

In terms of longevity, I seem to get it to last in the 6-8 hour range, which is good enough for most purposes. Though, you may need to reapply in case you need a marathon wear for one day.

Midnight Romance strikes me as more of a spring scent and I really like it in the warm weather. However, I haven’t tested it in the high heat, so I’m not too sure how it’ll hold up in those temperatures.

I feel like this would be, a solid all around scent for either school or office, but still sexy enough to use on a date. It is pretty damn appealing to my nose, as a guy.

I really don’t get what the ‘Midnight’ name comes from, it’s not a dark or really a nighttime scent. It actually leans the other way.

Overall Impressions of Midnight Romance

Overall, is Midnight Romance worth a buy? I think so. It isn’t the most amazing scent ever but it seems to do almost everything well. The scent is attractive, it lasts, it projects, and it’s versatile. It’s not my favorite from the Romance line, though, it’s near the top.

You might want to avoid if you’re not a fan of raspberry or peony scents, but if that’s your thing, then this Ralph Lauren perfume could be a great bet.

I like the raspberry and vanilla opening act. It’s sweet and has a great creamy finish. The iris and peony are fine, but I enjoy that opening act. The raspberry keeps me involved here.

The performance is above average too. If there’s discount bottles floating around now, that could make this a value play.

It’s honestly pretty solid all around, so, if it sounds appealing this could easily be a daily wear. The versatility and balance, makes Midnight Romance, a good pickup at the right price.

7 Best Smelling Polo Ralph Lauren Perfumes

Ralph Lauren is an iconic American designer who has made the classic preppy look famous and fashionable for decades now. In the fragrance game, the brand has produced amazing and ever popular scents for both men and women over the years, whether it be under the Polo label or under the designer’s own name.

I have update this list to include some newer releases from Ralph Lauren, as well as, to purge some of the more difficult to find discontinued scents.

What are the Best Ralph Lauren Perfumes for Her?

Popular Versatile Floral Wear

Ralph Lauren Romance Eau de Parfum Spray for Women, 3.4 Fluid Ounce
Elegant and sultry floral perfume that will set off a romantic mood. Romance starts off with some citrus to lead one it to it’s main floral composition. Rose is prominent but not entirely dominant, as this Ralph Lauren fragrance, is much more akin to walking in a blooming garden than being spritzed with rose water.

It has a very feminine air, it’s sophisticated yet upbeat, and the florals are flanked by pink pepper and musk. The latter two notes add enough spice to make things interesting and seductive, otherwise, you might just be left with another boring floral perfume.

Romance adds other floral notes such as marigold and jasmine to add to the bouquet effect. It’s blended so well as to make it quite clean and more difficult to discern the individual notes. It’s not overly strong but has good longevity. It seems best used on spring and summer days, but with a name like Romance, it can be fantastic on a date night too. Romance EDP Review

Clean Pear and Hazelnut

Woman by Ralph Lauren 3.4 oz Eau de Parfum Spray– Woman is the newest addition to this list, having been released after I posted the initial version, some years back. It starts with a fresh out of the shower vibe, with a clean pear note, that is flanked by soapy elements.

After a bit of time, the beautiful floral notes emerge, mainly orange blossom and tuberose. It has a spring/summery vibe with more of an outdoorsy smell than many of the aquatic types that get associated with the warmer months of the year.

I really enjoy the orange blossom here, with the hazelnut that comes in, Woman provides a very enjoyable sensory experience. The aromas form a fragrance that has grown on me, the more I have smelled it.

During the dry down, sensations of hazelnut and woody notes pop out, but never take things over fully. It’s a moderately strong perfume, that is pleasant, and safe enough to be worn in an office or at school. It strikes me as a definite day time wear, particularly in a casual to semi-formal setting. Raspberry and Vanilla Beauty

Beyond Romance from Ralph Lauren– Beyond Romance is a great sweet and sugary perfume. It kicks off with the raspberry note, that is joined by some light citrus touches.

Black vanilla, rose, and cashmeran gives this one a slight powdery hint…that sort of comes across like marshmallow for a part of the wear.

Raspberry and vanilla are the dominant notes, with musk and cashmeran finishing things off. The floral notes are rose, jasmine, and lily of the valley. Though, none of them play too major of a role in Beyond Romance.

Decent power and performance, just not spectacular. The scent itself, is. If you enjoy this sort of perfume, it develops a nice balance without becoming too childish with its sugary aroma. Beyond Romance Review

Fresh Semi-Aquatic

Ralph Lauren Blue by Ralph Lauren Eau De Toilette Spray 4.2 oz Women
A moderate and everyday wear that is highlighted by white floral notes similar to some Michael Kors fragrances. Ralph Lauren Blue is definitely for those who love notes such as gardenia, lily, and jasmine.

There is an element of an aquatic feel, as the name might suggest, but its pretty subtle and never comes close to taking over the floral composition. Blue is super fresh, with a slight powdery aroma, and underlying musk and sandalwood to give it more depth.

The watery feeling comes from flowers like lily and lotus, with some light fruit touches of juicy melon underneath. Lots of jasmine here, which pairs absolutely beautifully with the gardenia.

Great Fruity Floral Fragrance

Ralph by Ralph Lauren for Women, Eau De Toilette Natural Spray, 3.4 Ounce
A bright and sexier type of floral based fragrance that pairs with fruit notes such as apple and mandarin. The two fruit notes are the main event, so this is a good choice for ladies who don’t want a perfume completely dominated by flowers, like Ralph Lauren Blue.

Ralph is a warm weather scent, that has a sporty edge, and aquatic underpinnings. This is pretty sweet (fruity sweet) and has a fantastic crisp freshness about it. Ralph has more a youthful vibe and isn’t very complex, by any means.

However, it is a really good fragrance, and has a well earned spot near the top in its niche.

Sweet and Tart Scent

Ralph Lauren Polo Big Pony Eau de Toilette Spray for Women, No.2 Pink, 3.4 Fluid Ounce
Very soft and sweet perfume containing notes of cranberry, tonka bean, and some floral ingredients. Big Pony 2 is a simple and straightforward wear. One must have an appreciation for the sharp sweetness of cranberry and the smooth creamy tonka bean.

The cranberry note brings to mind Polo Red for men, that is upbeat, fun, and has a sunny demeanor. The main difference is that this doesn’t have a  lemon note complementing it. Cranberry paired with tonka bean is very unique and actually comes together surprisingly well.

A Classic Ralph Lauren

Lauren Perfume by Ralph Lauren for Women 118 ml / 4 oz Eau de Toilette Spray
A vintage type of fragrance which dates back to the late 70s. Lauren is youthful but a little more refined than something like the entry above.

This fragrance features more earthy notes to go along with sweet fruit and floral. If one can still find a vintage bottle, Lauren is an excellent blast from the past.

The updated versions are still very good, though, somewhat different from what the older ones brought to the table. It seems drier, with a greater emphasis on the sage note, for some of the wear. Later in the dry down, Lauren brings out some softer dewy floral petals of lilac and lily. Performance is good, and this still has that classic sort of feeling.

Beyond Romance by Ralph Lauren

Beyond Romance is a follow up scent in the Romance line from Ralph Lauren. I got a hold of a sample of this release as a part of a larger lot of perfume samples. I didn’t really know anything about it coming in and wasn’t sure of what to expect. Is it a good perfume? How does it smell? Is it even worth a try?

My Full Review

Let’s see how Ralph Lauren describes it: A new adventure in Romance. Discover the mysterious, daring, and wild fragrance that goes beyond with a seductive blend of fresh rose centifolia and luscious black vanilla.

Beyond Romance starts off with its fruit trio of raspberry, mandarin, and bergamot. The raspberry is going the be the strongest of the three for the duration of the wear, but early on there is a bit more of an even split with the citrus notes.

It’s a sweet start with the sugary aspects of this fragrance becoming apparent from the start. The black vanilla note will be noticeable and it kind of smells like there is a marshmallow note in the mix as well.

Probably the vanilla mixing with the cashmeran, giving it a light powdery aroma for some of the wear. Well, along with the floral notes. Really, only the rose truly sticks out for any length of time, the rest of the way it seems like a generic floral aroma sitting underneath.

At some point, the citrus notes burn off and it becomes the raspberry and vanilla show. The floral notes under that with an air of musk and the cashmere.

That’s essentially it. For stretches, it will smell more sugary. That brief powdery stint. Then, more of a musky cashmere finish down the home stretch.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The sillage is actually quite good during the first couple of hours. Yes, after that it is a lighter moderate perfume, but Beyond Romance does have some power. Spraying it on some clothes, I can pick it up in the 6-8 feet range.

The longevity is decent, not great. I’d say about 6-7 hours, is what to expect. The last 1-2 hours being pretty close to the skin.

Seasonally, I’d really just avoid the high heat with this. Outside of the sweltering days of summer, this Ralph Lauren should be fine.

It’s sugary sweetness does make it seem like it’d be mostly a teenager’s scent, but really it’s not. It’s well blended and not screeching with sharp top notes. The cashmeran really helps to temper things and this could appeal to a wider age range than you’d think.

It’s a pretty and deliciously attractive perfume. Not formal, but okay for daily wear and even romantic wear into the evening…as the name implies.

Overall Impressions of Beyond Romance

Overall, do I like Beyond Romance? I really do. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this, right after the first spray. I generally like the fruity and sugary perfumes, but sometimes they go overboard. This one, has a nice balance.

Raspberry and vanilla are going to be the main attractions here. So, if you’re not a fan, forget it. But, if it sounds up your alley, the citrus notes with the florals and musk create a wonderful dynamic.

The performance is decent, just not a complete marathon runner with how long it goes. Though, I can’t say that I was particularly disappointed with Beyond either.

While it’s not a complete match for scents on the Ariana Grande line or Burberry Her, it is definitely in that same category. If you’re familiar with any of those, it’s around what you should expect with Beyond Romance.

I recommend giving it a try, if you’re in the market for a sugary sweet perfume that isn’t completely immature. Solid value at Ralph Lauren prices too.

Ralph Rocks by Ralph Lauren

Moving right through my sample reviews, today we have an entry from Ralph Lauren, Ralph Rocks. This one was released in 2006 and was a part of the ‘Ralph’ Collection of fragrances. In this post, I will discuss: how it smells, what’s inside, how it performs, when it should be worn, and if it is worth a purchase.

What does Ralph Rocks Smell Like?

Notes include: lemon, kiwi, passion fruit, orange blossom, sandalwood, palm leaf, amber, freesia

My Review

My immediate reaction to smelling this perfume after applying was being intrigued by the tropical aroma. I had no idea what the notes were at the time and thought that there was a vague coconut like note in there.

But not quite coconut. The aroma is very smooth and screams the island life and that main player happened to be passion fruit. Plus, how the kiwi blends with the sandalwood, gives it that slight pseudo-coconut scent.

It sort of reminds me of Virgin Island Water. Not in its fragrance per se, rather, the lotion like creamy smoothness that is produced by Ralph Rocks. What I like about this scent, is that while it is a tropical scent, it doesn’t have a cold oceanic quality to it.

No, Ralph Rocks is warmed by the amber note and provides a lush floral undertone, which ties the whole scent together. It’s all very sweet and enchanting but it doesn’t have that candy-like sugary smell to it.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, Ralph Rocks isn’t a powerhouse. It sticks around, but is more of perfume that stays within one’s own personal space. Not a simple skin scent, but within 3-5 feet. Not even the opening act, is all that powerful, it’s a fairly steady scent.

Longevity is seemingly okay, as well. I got about 6 hours of wear from a few dabs out of the sample vial. Not great but not awful either. Even trying it for a few times, this is about what I came to expect with Ralph Rocks. A fairly decent performer, but not elite, at all.

Ralph Rocks is a definite spring and summertime fragrance. As I mentioned before, it is such a nice change of pace from super fruity or super aquatic summer perfumes.

It is simple and inoffensive enough to be worn to work, school, or casually. It’s not really a sexy scent in my mind, but I think that it is quite pleasant to be around.

This Ralph Lauren perfume has really good versatility in terms of when you can wear it, but also, it can fit well with a wide age range. It is a simple fragrance to reach for and spray on, on an almost daily basis.

Overall Impressions of Ralph Rocks

Overall, would I recommend Ralph Rocks? Yes. This is assuming that you can buy a bottle. This perfume has been discontinued, so you will have to find some unsold stock of it online.

Though, it appears the body lotion is still available on Amazon, as of now. This is a very nice casual perfume and has a somewhat unique take on the tropical fragrance arena. I like it.

It wasn’t ever an amazing fragrance, though, it is a very good one. Nice smell, good enough performance, and can be worn in many instances. If you do happen upon a bottle, I wouldn’t pay an outlandish price to possess it.

Romance by Ralph Lauren

Romance has been one of the most popular fragrances from Ralph Lauren for decades now. I was sent a sample of the latest batch, with a fragrance order that I put in a few months ago, and so I of course had to write a review finally. How does it smell? How long does it last? Is it worth a try?

What does Romance by Ralph Lauren Smell Like?

Notes include: jasmine, rose, musk, mandarin essence, pink pepper, marigold, geranium, patchouli, oakmoss

My Full Review

A romantic heart of rose Damascena blended with a delicate veil of jasmine absolute.

Romance opens up with a light mandarin orange essence, that feels quite watery within the composition. This is a well put together floral blend with a certain herbal green-quality coming through the mix, probably the geranium.

It’s fresh and has a chilled sort of aroma. Early on, I do pick up plenty of that rose note, but it isn’t super distinct from the rest of the floral heart. In some ways, I think that the floral notes are hidden by the ever-present pink pepper and musk notes.

As it dries down, I get just a musky and fresh floral fragrance. Sometimes, the jasmine will peak through or the rose will have its turn again. Mostly, it is just the impression of a bouquet. Clean with a spicy kick from the pink pepper note and the woodsy green-ish aroma still coming through.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The sillage here, isn’t too powerful. It’ll project somewhere in the 4-6 foot range, at its peak, in my experience. A moderate wear that is clean and unobtrusive.

I can go above 7 hours of wear with Romance, on my skin, maybe it’ll hit 8 under certain circumstances. But, mostly that 7 hour mark should be what to expect.

Seasonally, spring and summer mostly. Anywhere from a temperate climate to a hotter one. It would probably be a bit out of place during the coldest days of winter time.

Romance is quite versatile. It would fit a wide age range. It can venture into work, school, casual, and nightlife. It does have a romantic kind of vibe, as the name implies, but isn’t really a super sexy scent. Nice and attractive, but not something that I’d go crazy for.

Overall Impressions of Romance

I’m pretty sure that this fragrance has undergone some reformulations, over the years. This review is for the latest batch here in 2021. After over 20 years, it’s not surprising that they have changed things up.

Do I like this version? I do. It certainly has its pluses, but doesn’t completely wow me. It is a very green/watery/musky sort of floral. Very attractive and has enough going for it to not smell completely like a garden.

The performance is good, but not outstanding. I can get nearly a full workday of wear from Romance without much trouble. It’s a nice smelling and versatile scent, that can be beautiful on the right person.
