Hugo Red by Hugo Boss

I’ll be making my way through plenty of reviews over the next few weeks and today I thought that I’d go with one from Hugo Boss, Hugo Red. I’ve already included this cologne on my list of best by Hugo Boss, however, I want to give it a closer look that I feel it deserves.

In this post, I will explore what makes up Red, what it smells like, how it performs, and whether or not I think it is worth a buy. Note: This page has been updated a few times since its original posting.

Hugo Red Full Review

Hugo Red is quite an interesting scent to me. At times, it reminds me of some other fragrance that I’ve once smelled and at other times it seems wholly unique.

The opening is the usual citrus affair of pineapple and grapefruit notes which give it a spring/summer fruity vibe to it. The pink pepper and amber feel, has a Guess Seductive quality to it.

But, this is a fresher and less heavy kind of cologne.

However, Hugo Red becomes interesting in that there is this almost metallic aroma to it, sort of like Creed Himalaya (which I don’t enjoy) but in Red it is enjoyable.

The spice to this really isn’t really heavy and it’s kind of tough to explain. Red has a warm and woodsy heart that is only slight spicy and provided by the amber, pink pepper, and cedar.

It’s sort of unique because the rhubarb note isn’t all that common in many fragrances and I think that this note is what is setting Hugo Red apart.

This fragrance is quite clean, crisp, and refreshing. People also seem to dig it while I have it on, even if it can seem synthetic/generic at times.

There’s a very slight tonka bean after a while, but it isn’t all that noticeable during most wears.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

It is a moderate projection and I could detect it without having to get close to my skin. It stays moderate for 2-4 hours, before having a lighter sillage, but sticking around for a long while.

This fragrance has a reputation of not lasting long but I got really good wear out of it. I put it on the night before and it was quite noticeable still when I woke up the next morning.

Update: Upon wearing this for a while, I actually can get 8+ hours easily, but it fits in the 8-10 hour range mostly.

This would be a great choice for the warmer months, but I think it’d perform pretty well in wintertime, also. I like to wear it casually or for a night out during the summertime.

Hugo Red isn’t really an office scent, can have more of a youthful vibe. Not just for teenagers, but can work great for guys in their mid-20s. It just works in its simplicity, and has a unique enough vibe, to make it worthwhile.

Overall Impressions of Hugo Red

Overall, is Hugo Red a buy? It does smell good and it’s completely safe to wear for any occasion. I’d say that this could be an everyday summer wear for guys in the 18-30 range. It’s not too expensive and was a solid performer for me.

If you like citrus based scents with a woodsy/spicy heart, then Hugo Red is worth a look. I actually really enjoy this as a summertime citrus fragrance.

It’s unique and has a great blend of tartness and sweetness. That metallic finish is a great addition to making this Hugo Boss scent, stand out on its own.

Is it amazing? No, but it is all around a very good cologne, that has flown under the radar.

Update: Red has been discontinued by Boss. It’s harder to get a hold of bottles, but they do still exist, and usually for a great price. But, that’ll change as soon as the fragrance gets scarce.

I wouldn’t pay too much for a bottle, as it’s basically a fun summertime fragrance. Though, I’d enjoy having it again, if it were still a value.

7 Best Smelling Hugo Boss Perfumes for Her

Hugo Boss is a design house that has been around for ages and is still going strong. One of the highlights of this brand is their fragrance line for both men and women.

From this line, one can find very nice scent choices that are in the more moderate price range than something like Bond No. 9 for instance.

In this post, I want to put forth 7 Hugo Boss perfumes which could be considered the best smelling of the bunch.

What are the Best Hugo Boss Perfumes for Ladies?

Note: It seems like there has been a lot of purging of product from the Hugo Boss women’s fragrance line.  Nonetheless, I’ll put forward my picks from the past, and link to them since they can be found elsewhere. I’ve added to this list, however, and retained some of the older scents.

Fresh Floral/Fruity Perfume

Femme 2.5 Oz Eau De Parfum Spray Women– Boss Femme is highlighted by floral notes such as freesia, rose, jasmine, and fleur de lys along with fruity notes such as tangerine and apricot.

It has a fresh floral scent that is good for everyday wear without being overbearing and the tangerine provides a subtle citrus undertone.

It opens with the mix of the fruit and floral notes before, the freesia and rose become the main attraction.

It’s a citrusy sort of smell with a bit of sharp black currant added, as well. Boss Femme is a fairly light fragrance, that fits in well during the day time, and can be safely worn every day.

A-lively Perfume

Boss Alive– Boss Alive EDP is the initial release from their newest line, which isn’t so new anymore. This one isn’t as sweet, but has more of a crisp juiciness and tartness, thanks to apple and plum.

Actually, I’m a bit reminded of their Boss Bottled No.6 for Men, due to that apple and cinnamon. Obviously, not the same, but I can certainly detect the similarities. This is indeed still feminine.

Jasmine and thyme are the heart of this scent. It’s initially fruity and spicy, then, it becomes a cleaner jasmine and woods in the dry down. While, still maintaining some level of sweetness throughout.

Sweet Orange and Chocolate

Boss The Scent Private Accord– Cacao and coffee team up here in a big way, along with a nice mandarin orange note. The coffee plays less of a factor, later in the wear.

This was probably the best offering from the ‘The Scent’ line of perfumes for her (Intense was also decent).

Update: They’re no longer on Boss’ website, so, it may have been discontinued. The newer ‘The Scent’ offerings, don’t strike me as being quite as good.

It is sweet and light, with a bit of a floral heart and some added spice. Not a super complicated fragrance, but a nice gourmand for those who love that orangey chocolate aroma.

I like that it never gets too heavy or overwhelming, even if that mean sacrificing a bit on the performance end of things.

Sweet, Dry, Woody

Boss Ma Vie Pour Femme– Boss Ma Vie brings together the unique (cactus) with well worn ingredients like rose and freesia. It opens up with a fresh, green, and distinctive smell. You definitely get the full cactus experience, that is flanked by mainly the freesia.

Ma Vie Pour Femme is a fairly light fragrance, that gives you sweet elements, with dry/fresh woodsy base notes. Up top, it does have a little bit of a sour tinge, but overall comes across as clean and very enjoyable.

The performance is good enough to last all day and one that can be worn in almost any situation.

Best Winter Boss Perfume

Deep Red 3.0 Fl. Oz. Eau De Toilette Spray Women– Sexy and energetic with citrus notes provided by blood orange, mandarin, and clementine. Plus, black currant. Very sweet fragrance and the floral notes including vanilla become more apparent as it wears on.

As the dry down develops, the vanilla is joined by ginger, sandalwood, and white floral notes lead by tuberose. It becomes drier and warmer the deeper that you get into it. Yet, it is upbeat and rather sporty.

Deep Red is fresh and has a nice cold weather vibe, with good versatility, so that it can also be used as a nighttime scent. Sillage isn’t too heavy and has a solid wear time.

Unique Fruity Scent

Xx 3.4 Fl. Oz. Eau De Toilette Spray Women.– Blueberry, mandarin, rose, jasmine, musk, and amber. Semi-sweet fragrance but not overly so and also it’s quite feminine and fresh.

Plenty of jasmine and rose up front, but the mandarin, litchi, and blueberry are also sitting up top, giving XX a fruitier aroma from the start. What’s unique about this one, is that it also features basmati rice.

I’ve literally never seen that listed on any other fragrance (the basmati variety, at least), but it adds a bit of uniqueness to things. XX isn’t a very complex fragrance, but it is definitely one that can catch attention.

Fruity Aquatic Fragrance

Hugo By Hugo Boss For Women. Eau De Toilette Spray 1.3 Ounces– A juicy/aquatic type of perfume that is dominated by fruit notes like apple, berries, and peach. Hugo Woman is clean, soft, fresh, and has some light floral notes to complement the fruits.

The fruit notes start out the top of the perfume, with a crisp and juicy aroma of mainly, the apple and melon notes. It smells fairly aquatic at this stage, quite light, and hangs gently in the air.

As it dries down, Hugo Woman reveals more flowers: jasmine, hyacinth, and lily and very light woods. It’s a great everyday wear option for the warmer months, as it is office safe, pleasant, and versatile.

Boss Bottled Tonic by Hugo Boss

I have gone through a ton of different Hugo Boss fragrances on this site. Some surprised me as to how much I enjoyed wearing a particular fragrance, while others I couldn’t understand what the appeal of it actually was.

Today’s review is going to deal with the flanker fragrance to a Hugo Boss cologne that I actually enjoyed, and that flanker’s name is Boss Bottled Tonic.

How does this one smell? Perform? When should it be worn? Is it worth a buy? Please continue below for my full take on Tonic.

My Full Wear Review

Boss Bottled Tonic opens with a crisp and watery blend of apple and orange. It strikes me as quite cold, like iced club soda with citrus squeezed into it.

That’s actually a really nice change of pace. Many others that go this route, try to make it some sort of gin and tonic aroma. This Boss scent doesn’t go the alcoholic path.

It’s a light fragrance and one with a bit of spice to it. The ginger note is the main player but there is also the cinnamon found in the original Boss Bottled.

As it moves along, it becomes more woodsy. The ginger tonic water is still there but the citrus and apple notes have begun to recede at this point.

After this point, the fragrance really stops developing, as far as I can tell and is wholly linear. What your left with is a splash with ginger, light woods, and the remains of the opening fruit notes.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, Boss Bottled Tonic is super light. Upon first application, it is fairly moderate, but that ends in short order. So, yeah, the sillage of this one isn’t great. It’s not going to leave a huge scent trail or even create much of a bubble for yourself to enjoy.

The longevity on my skin was kind of meh. I put a lot of it on my wrists and the scent was still gone in 4-5 hours. That seems to be the max. But, that super long type of wear is not really what this kind of cologne is designed for.

So, coming into purchasing this, you’ll have to expect a short-lived refresher kind of cologne. Much more limited in its use case versus others.

Seasonally, Boss Bottled Tonic is spring and summer. Built for casual wear or something low key for office settings. It’s not a club beast and while clean, isn’t what you’d call sexy. It could be worn subtly, to decent effect.

This fragrance is just something to spray on before the gym or when you want a quick refresher. It isn’t really strong enough, at least on me, to be very much more than that.

Though, within that framework in the summer, it does have a certain appeal to it.

Overall Impressions of Boss Bottled Tonic

Overall, do I like Boss Bottled Tonic. I like aspects of it, but would rather wear the original Boss Bottled. The overall composition never really grabs my attention and I can’t really see myself ever wanting to wear this, even if I had a full bottle available.

It’s nice, but it doesn’t really seem to serve any real purpose for me. Everything about it just screams average.

I enjoy the ginger note and the cool aroma it brings on a warm day. Other than that, the scent is entirely forgettable to me.

The ginger with the opening citrus and apple is my favorite part, I’d say. After that, it’s nothing that exciting.

If you can get this cheap, really love the Boss Bottled series, or are looking for a short-lived summertime freshie…maybe this will be one to consider. If you want a daily wear fragrance, this isn’t going to be it.

Boss Bottled Infinite by Hugo Boss

Jumping back into the fragrance review, side of things. I have a post today of a newer release for 2019, in men’s fragrances, Boss Bottled Infinite by Hugo Boss. I didn’t even know, that they had come out with another flanker scent to this lineup, but wanted to give it a try when I saw it. What does it smell like? How does it perform? Is the sillage any good? Is this fragrance worth a try?

What Does Boss Bottled Infinite Smell Like?

Notes include: mandarin, apple, cinnamon, lavender, sandalwood, rosemary, olive wood, and patchouli

My Full Wear Review

This is going to be a one wear review of Infinite, that I will come back and add to, when I spend more time with this fragrance. However, I got to wear it from the store and took along a card sprayed with it, as well. So, I got a solid idea to what this one is all about, not that it’s super complex.

The opening is a blast of mandarin and some apple, at the top, and surrounded by a sense of freshness. It’s a slightly spicy freshness, but at that stage, the notes weren’t too distinguishable from one another.

However, looking at the notes, I’d say it is the cinnamon and rosemary coming through. Those two are probably slightly tempered by lavender and some sandalwood.

As it moves along a bit further, the mandarin takes more of the fruit share from the apple. This is joined by a fully emerged lavender and the smell of rosemary. Very smooth and clean, with that rosemary spice, and woodsy undertones.

Sandalwood? Some. Mostly, what I guess is olive wood, as I’m not familiar with that aroma.

Finally, the dry down, is a woodsy lavender fragrance with some citrus. It’s lavender, wood, patchouli, and mandarin.

At times, this does remind me of Boss Bottled Tonic, but like a stronger inversion. Bottled Tonic, wasn’t great, and this share the fruit and cinnamon. Bottled Infinite beefs up the woodsy notes and doesn’t rely so much of the fruit.

Sillage, Longevity, Versatility

This fragrance starts off fairly strong, for about an hour or two. The sillage is great, at the start, and will get noticed. It calms down substantially, thereafter, and is pretty moderate. Not completely weak. The longevity was pretty good.

Wasn’t an all day wear, based off that one test, but not crummy like some other Boss scents. It probably ran in the 7 hour range, for me. Again, I still want to test it more, but that’s the first go round. Update: Yep, 6-8 hours is what to expect from this one. Mostly, that midpoint 7 hour mark.

The strength of this fragrance, probably stems from its versatility. It isn’t really beholden to any one season, but probably not best at the height of summer.

Seems good for spring or autumn. Winter, it’ll do fine, it’s not the typical heavy cold weather fragrance. This one can pull double duty as a daily wear and/or nighttime go to. Boss Bottled Infinite is a cologne that can cover a lot of ground for those who only want to own a few fragrances.

It has a masculine smell, with an attractive, and sexy sort of aroma. I can see this one becoming a popular cologne over the next few years. In fact, the lady at the department store said that, Infinite was the best seller among the new releases. It should get plenty of complements.

Maybe not the most formal of fragrances, but it is well put together and stylish enough to be a daily wear at the office or school if you’re a younger guy.

Overall Impressions

Do I like Boss Bottled Infinite? Yes, I do. The first wear was nice. Update: Trying this some more, I still really enjoy wearing Infinite. The mandarin, lavender, and wood blend feels distinctly Hugo Boss.

I like the apple and mandarin here and the lavender doesn’t feel like it’s too overwhelming in the mix. Infinite has a nice balance of its ingredients.

Really, this is one of the better Boss Bottled releases, maybe my personal favorite of the past handful of years. Nothing too groundbreaking here, but this formula just works for me.

Like, I’ve come across all of these notes in their other scents, and it brings to mind so many of them. The orange, made me think of Boss in Motion, as that also has a spiciness to it.

It isn’t a terribly complex fragrance, nor is it super original. Nonetheless, it smells good and gives a good performance. Infinite is a well-balanced scent, that is going to be a good option for a guy, who wants a daily wear. Wants something that is easy to reach for and is going to be well-liked by others.

That’s what you’re going to get with this. I do still want to give Boss Bottled Infinite some more wears, but right now, I can recommend it as worth a try.

Boss The Scent for Her Intense by Hugo Boss

As of now, I have yet to try the original women’s version of Boss The Scent, but I grabbed a sample of the Intense version to review. So, I won’t be comparing the two in this review, but will simply stick to Boss The Scent for Her Intense. How does it smell? When should it be worn? How does it perform? Is it worth a try?

What does Boss The Scent for Her Intense Smell Like?

Notes include: honeyed peach, osmanthus, vanilla, cocoa

Click here to try: Hugo Boss SCENT FOR HER INTENSE Eau de Parfum, 1.6 Fl Oz

My Full Wear Review

Before we get into my review, let’s see what the brand says about this fragrance: An irresistible fragrance, unforgettable like a savored seduction. Exquisite notes of honeyed peach, captivating osmanthus absolute, dark cocoa and vanilla unfold over time for an intense experience.

The opening of Boss The Scent Intense starts off with a strong peach note that’s dipped in a light honey. It’s fruity and sweet, with a floral undertone. It’s got a warm and enticing aroma.

It kind of reminds me of another fragrance, but I can’t quite place what this comes close to smelling like. Not exactly like Viva La Juicy, just something along those lines, perhaps?

Boss The Scent Intense isn’t a super complicated perfume. The development beyond the initial notes, consists mostly of the cocoa and vanilla, coming into the fold.

Between the two, the cocoa is the stronger, with the vanilla hanging around, mostly underneath the composition. During this development, the peach is toned down, and the aroma takes on a creamier feel.

The peach does start to take a back seat, the osmanthus becomes more noticeable, late in the wear. With that is honey and the cocoa. That’s pretty much the scent, in totality.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Sillage wise, is it actually intense? It doesn’t project itself insanely far or anything, but with the sweetness, I guess it can come off as being intense. It leaves a scent trail for a couple of hours, after that it’ll be a more intimate scent bubble, though not a skin scent.

The strength is on the upper end of moderate, but it can just hit harder, with all of those super sweet notes.

The longevity is good, but not amazing. I got Boss The Scent Intense to last for around 7 hours, on my skin. You might be able to squeeze out another hour or two with heavier application.

It’ll serve well in most scenarios, but isn’t a marathon runner, to any extent. A full workday is a decent target for Intense.

Seasonally, I’d stay in the autumn to early spring, with this fragrance. It does have notes, which lend themselves to the summer, but the cocoa and honey, will melt in the summer heat. It just wouldn’t hold up well.

I wouldn’t call this one a teenage scent, but it definitely skews more toward younger women. It’s sweetness is kind of girly, but not completely so. This is a casual daily wear, maybe for a night out or something like that. It doesn’t strike me as all that serious or ‘sexy’.

Overall Impression of Boss The Scent Intense

Overall, do I like Boss the Scent Intense? It smells nice enough. I’m not enthralled by it. I do like the honeyed peach note and when the cocoa comes into the picture.

That opening act seems to be this one peaks and then it falls off into being something much more forgettable. Sort of like the men’s versions of this one. They too had some interesting starts, winding up to be decent to somewhat nice.

The whole thing is pretty good. It ultimately doesn’t really move the needle for me. It’s performance is solid. It’s smell is nice at times, maybe going to be a little too much, for many women. It’s a serviceable scent.

Would I recommend running out and buying it? Not really. It’s worth a try, but maybe when you can snag a cheap bottle.
