Beyond Romance by Ralph Lauren

Beyond Romance is a follow up scent in the Romance line from Ralph Lauren. I got a hold of a sample of this release as a part of a larger lot of perfume samples. I didn’t really know anything about it coming in and wasn’t sure of what to expect. Is it a good perfume? How does it smell? Is it even worth a try?

Let’s see how Ralph Lauren describes it: A new adventure in Romance. Discover the mysterious, daring, and wild fragrance that goes beyond with a seductive blend of fresh rose centifolia and luscious black vanilla.

Beyond Romance starts off with its fruit trio of raspberry, mandarin, and bergamot. The raspberry is going the be the strongest of the three for the duration of the wear, but early on there is a bit more of an even split with the citrus notes.

It’s a sweet start with the sugary aspects of this fragrance becoming apparent from the start. The black vanilla note will be noticeable and it kind of smells like there is a marshmallow note in the mix as well.

Probably the vanilla mixing with the cashmeran, giving it a light powdery aroma for some of the wear. Well, along with the floral notes. Really, only the rose truly sticks out for any length of time, the rest of the way it seems like a generic floral aroma sitting underneath.

At some point, the citrus notes burn off and it becomes the raspberry and vanilla show. The floral notes under that with an air of musk and the cashmere.

That’s essentially it. For stretches, it will smell more sugary. That brief powdery stint. Then, more of a musky cashmere finish down the home stretch.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The sillage is actually quite good during the first couple of hours. Yes, after that it is a lighter moderate perfume, but Beyond Romance does have some power. Spraying it on some clothes, I can pick it up in the 6-8 feet range.

The longevity is decent, not great. I’d say about 6-7 hours, is what to expect. The last 1-2 hours being pretty close to the skin.

Seasonally, I’d really just avoid the high heat with this. Outside of the sweltering days of summer, this Ralph Lauren should be fine.

It’s sugary sweetness does make it seem like it’d be mostly a teenager’s scent, but really it’s not. It’s well blended and not screeching with sharp top notes. The cashmeran really helps to temper things and this could appeal to a wider age range than you’d think.

It’s a pretty and deliciously attractive perfume. Not formal, but okay for daily wear and even romantic wear into the evening…as the name implies.

Overall Impressions of Beyond Romance

Overall, do I like Beyond Romance? I really do. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this, right after the first spray. I generally like the fruity and sugary perfumes, but sometimes they go overboard. This one, has a nice balance.

Raspberry and vanilla are going to be the main attractions here. So, if you’re not a fan, forget it. But, if it sounds up your alley, the citrus notes with the florals and musk create a wonderful dynamic.

The performance is decent, just not a complete marathon runner with how long it goes. Though, I can’t say that I was particularly disappointed with Beyond either.

While it’s not a complete match for scents on the Ariana Grande line or Burberry Her, it is definitely in that same category. If you’re familiar with any of those, it’s around what you should expect with Beyond Romance.

I recommend giving it a try, if you’re in the market for a sugary sweet perfume that isn’t completely immature. Solid value at Ralph Lauren prices too.

Ralph’s Club EDP by Ralph Lauren

Ralph’s Club is a fragrance that I hadn’t really paid all that much attention to after its release. But, I eventually got a hold of it, as part of a sampler pack a few months ago. So, it was only a matter of time before I got to test it out and put this cologne through its paces. How does it smell? Does it last long? Is it worth a buy?

What does Ralph’s Club Smell Like?

Notes include: lavender, clary sage, cedar, vetiver

ralph's club review

My Full Review

Ralph’s Club opens up with a mix of the lavender and clary sage notes. While it is more herbal and greenish than this example, it actually reminds me somewhat of the start of Luna Rossa Ocean, just paired down.

If that Prada is a ‘blue’ cologne, this is a blue-green. There’s also elements of Y Le Parfum here. Just not a clone of either of those scents.

The lavender and sage are both very present there, along with some vetiver. The same sort of aromatic aroma, just without the oceanic and iris. Yet, there is a light powdery quality to Ralph’s Club early on.

It is very fresh, clean, and has a definite sweetness to keep it interesting.

The lavender is the head honcho, at the start. The clary sage is just a notch underneath. However, that will begin to flip as this Ralph Lauren cologne dries down. The sage never dominates, it just seems to switch roles with the lavender.

Beyond that, you’re going to get the woody freshness of cedar, which doesn’t come across as all that sharp here.

The rest of the wear is a fresh soapiness, with dry woodsy highlights. The powdery part and the sweetness have quieted down a whole lot and are seemingly background noise.

Clean and fresh like a soap or out of the drier laundry. Not too complicated, but still has its charms.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Sillage wise, Ralph’s Club isn’t a monster, but it is above average. For the first few hours, I’d say it’s on the upper edge of what could be considered moderate. Then, it’ll pretty middle of the road thereafter.

Thankfully, it isn’t weak and can project itself nicely off of the skin.

Longevity seems to be in the 7.5 hour range, on me. Again, not a totally great performer, but very useful and not a waste of money.

Seasonally, this can work pretty much year round. I’d avoid the extreme heat. However, cold to moderate temperatures and this thing is a go.

It’s a very attractive and easy to like cologne. The versatility is probably the greatest strength of Ralph’s Club. Casual, office, dressed up, a night out. It’s got you covered for most any occasion and can be worn by all age groups.

They did a really great job at making this one a jack of all trades.

Overall Impressions of Ralph’s Club

Overall, do I like Ralph’s Club? I do. It’s an appealing fragrance with solid performance and sure to be a crowd pleaser.

It’s a pretty basic formula and there isn’t a ton of development. But, the sage and lavender are good enough to carry it.

Yes, it is will remind you of various elements from other popular colognes, but it doesn’t smell exactly like any of them. Just hints of them, while doing its own thing.

The good news, is that if you really enjoy the smell of Ralph’s Club, it will reward you with its versatility. This could very well be a daily wear type of scent for some guys. Is it amazing? No, but it also doesn’t have any really noticeable deficiencies as a fragrance.

Polo Blue Gold Blend by Ralph Lauren

Polo Blue Gold Blend isn’t one that’s really been on my radar, since I’ve never been a massive fan of Ralph Lauren’s Blue line. I like all the fragrances, but nothing that has totally ever drawn me in. But, since Macy’s had full bottles of this on sale for $50, I decided to grab one and give it a review for the site. How does it smell? Is it actually worth a try?

What does Polo Blue Gold Blend Smell Like?

Notes include: melon, ginger, vetiver, sage, incense, citrus, apple, amber, and more

My Full Review

Polo Blue Gold Blend opens up with a mix that leans fruitier than towards its herbal spiciness. Early on, it’s melon, apple, and what seems like a lime within the citrus mix. Very fresh and has a nice crisp bite.

The main spice in the starting stage, is from the ginger. There’s briefly a pepper note, with sage playing the backup role, until when it will take over both of these notes later on.

You can tell that this is very much a Polo Blue flanker, closer to the EDP version, but sort of a midway point between that and EDT.

After that initial phase, the melon and apple notes move the citrus out of the way. The spices begin their shift, incense emerges, along with the ambroxan starting to really waft up from the base.

The impression that it gives off, as it dries down is being much less fruity and more of a fresh cologne. The melon and apple are solid, but don’t have that same punch as the opening citrus.

Sage and incense with lavender and ambroxan is essentially what I get for most of the dry down period. Clean with that warm amber smell and bits of spice and dry woodsy notes peaking through.

gold blend review

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, it’s pretty good. Not overly loud but not a skin scent either. On the longevity end, it might be a little bit better than the original but really, not by much. It’s definitely in the realm of average, in that regard.

Gold Blend also falls into the same longevity range as the other Polo Blue’s. I get in the 5-7 hour range, with it seemingly falling closer to the five or six area, thus far.

Seasonally, I’d wear this in the spring and summer months. It’s actually got the ability to venture into the nightlife during those months, so that’s a nice advantage to have.

It’s fine for daily wear, casual, sporty, etc. Not really anything formal, but could fit in, for most occasions. It’s also versatile enough to be worn by men of all ages. Really a jack of all trades, when it gets warm outside.

Overall Impressions of Polo Blue Gold Blend

Overall, do I like Gold Blend? I do. However, it’s about to the same extent as others in this series. Actually, I’d rank the EDP and Deep Blue above this version. Not way ahead, but I think they’re both somewhat better.

I like the opening act with the lime, melon, and apple notes. It’s nice and juicy with a spicy kick to it, while being similar to the other Polo Blue colognes.

At that point, it’s got itself some nice power and a clean and fresh aroma that is quite attractive.

Once it dries down, it’s a pretty boring scent. I mean, still enjoyable, just a standard blue ambroxan based cologne. At times, if feels like a not as good, AdG Profumo that’s mixed with Polo Blue and added the amber in the base (perhaps, some Bleu de Chanel?).

Not bad company to be in, but just not anything better than either, particularly the Armani scent. The incense is a great touch, in Gold Blend, one of the highlights for me.

The performance is pretty standard. Not great, but won’t completely crap out on you, in a few hours. For the spring and summer months, it’s a perfectly fine wear, that isn’t going to offend and can be an easy one to spray on.

Is it worth it? For the fifty bucks that I paid, sure. If it’s going closer to that hundred mark, I wouldn’t be so thrilled about it. I should probably get some use out of this bottle, personally. Polo Blue Gold Blend is a nice and adequate fragrance, just nothing amazing.

Polo Sport EDT by Ralph Lauren

Polo Sport was an insanely popular release back in the 1990s. I remember so many people wearing this, back then, and occasionally using some myself when I could get ahold of it. Since then, the ubiquity of use has calmed down, while this Ralph Lauren scent has pretty much achieved classic status. I grabbed a small sprayer of this cologne recently and wanted to give a full and proper review to Polo Sport.

My Full Review of Polo Sport

Obviously, I’m going to have to do this review with the current formulation of Polo Sport. Does it smell the same? My memory says no, but it doesn’t feel so radically different, that I couldn’t be wrong.

The opening act is a fresh burst of subdued citrus with fresh and quasi-soapy elements. I pick up plenty of orange, some lemon, as the man fruit notes. Then, there is the mint, lavender, and neroli. Up top, I mostly get mint and neroli, but the lavender will come on stronger later in the wear.

It’s got an absolutely chilled spice, with floral, and light aquatic smells due to the inclusion of seaweed. I appreciate the seaweed, in this Ralph Lauren cologne, versus something like Bvlgari Aqua. In the latter, I feel it becomes too much and distracts from my enjoyment.

The spice is fairly concentrated in the start, but within a few minutes, Polo Sport becomes smoother and more inviting with the citrus. This is when, I really begin to love this scent. The super cleanliness, vague watery pops, mint, and light floral touch.

Then, there is that aquatic sweetness. It’s a smell that I find difficult to describe in words, but it’s exactly how I’ve always identified Polo Sport, and really haven’t found it in any other scent. There’s just something with the way the citrus blends with the aquatic notes and other ingredients, that has always stood out to my nose.

During the dry down, things are pretty set. However, Sport does add a slight muskiness and woodiness, later on. The fresh spice, doesn’t bite as hard, and it really lingers as a true sporty/aquatic cologne.

Sillage, Longevity, Versatility

Projection wise, Polo Sport has never been super powerful. It’s got decent sillage, in the first few hours, and then hangs closer to the skin. Even with this newer bottle, it doesn’t strike me as ever being weak.

The longevity, seems to sit at about 5-7 hours on my skin. Not all that great, but still very useful. For me, the performance is better than Polo Blue EDT, which seems to get more attention these days.

Does is have the same level of power as before? Probably not. Is it terrible now? No.

Seasonally, this is a summer gem. Actually, any moderate to warmer weather situation will do, as Polo Sport is absolutely great. It’s a ‘colder’ sort of fragrance, so, it somewhat feels out of place during the winter.

Polo Sport is like the ultimate casual cologne, that can still venture into semi-formal occasions. Warm weather daily wear, mostly, but there have been plenty of guys who wear this out on a date. This such an easy reach, as a daily wear fragrance.

Really doesn’t require much thought at all, as it won’t offend and has a great soothing character. It’s such a near all-around fragrance, which is why it has stood the test of time for decades now.

One of the best aspects, is that it can be a fitting choice to wear for teenagers, as well as older men. It simply has that dynamic energy to it, without being childish, or cheap smelling. Again, though, if you need something formal look elsewhere.

Overall Impressions of Polo Sport

This is a nostalgia cologne for me and a lot of other people, who are old enough to remember the 1990s. But, in the fragrance game, things can change a lot. The scents you once loved can be destroyed by reformulations.

Is that the case, with Polo Sport? Not really. It’s different, in some ways, but still retains its soul and what made this perfume work. Is it as good? Again, not really. Though, it’s still very nice to wear, and they haven’t killed it.

Polo Sport is a classic, that is well worth giving a try to. I’m glad I bought a small travel sprayer, so that I can revisit this one. I’ll probably be wearing it, as the mood strikes me, over the ensuing months.

Has it lost a step? Almost certainly. Though, when compared with some other options from older eras that are still produced, the decline isn’t as noticeable. It’s still a fun scent with its strengths and it’s not a performance beast…but I still enjoyed coming back to this cologne.

Update: Having finished the travel sprayer, I have to say that I do still enjoy wearing Polo Sport. Definitely not my favorite or anything, but it still has the ability to charm. I mostly wore it casually around town or to the gym, as a quick freshener. I don’t think I’d pay full price for it, but with some discounts in place, I’d give it another round.

Woman by Ralph Lauren

I got a hold of a sample of the latest Ralph Lauren fragrance for ladies, entitled, Woman. This was a part of the ‘goody bag’ that Macy’s sent me when I bought a bottle of Ultra Male, which consisted of all female perfumes. Update: This one came out back in 2017, I’m updating the page years later.

As such, I just had to do a review on this scent, and see if they released something great or a complete dud. I will cover what notes it contains, how it smells, how it performs, and whether or not I think that Woman is worth a buy.

What does Woman by Ralph Lauren Smell Like?

Notes include: black currant, tuberose, pear, rhubarb, sandalwood, orange blossom, hazelnut, rose

Click here to try: Woman by Ralph Lauren at Sephora

From the opening spray, I really enjoy the aroma that Woman by Ralph Lauren gives off. I detect the pear note which when combined with the other initial stars of the show, has a shower-fresh and soapy quality to it.

There is that fruity vibe lingering throughout the life of this perfume but it definitely becomes more of a white floral affair as it moves along.

The two main floral notes that I get from it are the tuberose and orange blossom. There is a rose note as well but it doesn’t seem all that prominent to my nose in this composition; it is there, however.

The floral notes give Woman a fresh/outdoorsy/summery vibe and it is one that will brighten up a person’s mood.

Most of what you’re going to get from this perfume is revealed in the first 30 minutes or so of wear. As it gets further into things, the hazelnut and woody notes are detectable but they never were that strong in my opinion, I had to focus in on it pretty much to catch them.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Projection wise, it isn’t a bomb, but I do think it is fairly strong. I also sprayed it on an old t-shirt and could smell it while walking by and could catch whiffs while 6-8 feet away. Though, it does settle down a great deal more from there.

The longevity is just okay, 5-6 hours seems to be the time frame for max performance, and possibly a few more hours as a skin scent.

This totally strikes me as a spring fragrance. It’s clean, bright, and feminine. The floral and fruit notes are vibrant and full of life, just like on a warm day.

It would also do well in the cooler weather but might not be that great at the height of summer.

I think that this does have some good versatility as well. It’s appropriate for the office or school but can also be worn on a date, no problem. If it’s not really a ‘sexy’ perfume, it is a highly attractive one, that is pleasant to be around.

Overall Impressions of Woman by Ralph Lauren

Overall, is Woman worth a purchase? I’d say yes. This is in my mind, one of the best releases that Ralph Lauren has put out over the past 5-plus (?) years (although, I did like the Romance line).

This could easily become an everyday scent for someone who enjoys lighter floral fragrances that are held in check by fruit notes and doesn’t become overbearing. It’s a great introductory perfume for those who want an easier tuberose experience.

Update: This is one that fits well alongside something like L’Interdit or My Way by Armani, in terms of style. Different scents, but closely related. I’m surprised Woman wasn’t more popular, than it is. They released an Intense version later. It might be discontinued, as it’s not in stock at all on the Ralph Lauren website.

The only downside to me, is the fact that it isn’t a beast in the longevity department, but it is decent enough in that regard. The smell of the fragrance itself? Very enjoyable and has a mass appeal.
