The One Gold for Men by D&G

The One series from D&G continues on and on into the future. Not that it’s a bad thing, since I actually enjoy these colognes.

In 2021, the brand came out with The One Gold for Men, whose bottle looks a lot like the women’s version…which can lead to confusion. Anyway, how does this one smell? Does it perform well? Is it even worth a try?

Quick Overview

The One Gold for Men is a brighter, more citrus-driven departure from the usual Dolce & Gabbana The One style. It opens with blood orange, bergamot, red ginger, and cardamom, giving it a juicy but spicy freshness that feels noticeably different from the sweeter, darker fragrances in the rest of the line.

As the ginger fades, clary sage, geranium, cardamom, patchouli, and vetiver move forward, creating a fresher aromatic and slightly woody middle. The final dry down becomes sweeter and more synthetic, with amberwood taking over alongside lingering sage and geranium.

Overall, The One Gold is pleasant and different enough to be interesting, but the best part is the first 45 minutes or so; after that, it settles into a fairly ordinary fresh woody scent. It is worth trying at a discount, but I would still choose The One EDP Intense or the original EDT ahead of it.

Here’s how Dolce & Gabbana describes it: The One For Men Gold celebrates a man who has a natural but unmistakable magnetism. A true gentleman, he exudes confidence with his innate elegance and unique style. The One For Men Gold is the olfactory embodiment of this masculine charisma – a sophisticated Eau de Parfum Intense that is as powerfully alluring as the man who wears it.

The One Gold opens up with it citrus and aromatic spiciness coming in strong. Blood orange and a bright bergamot really makes this one pop. But, the red ginger and cardamom are full present at the start as well.

A couple things to note here. First, this is different scent than the other The One fragrances. Yes, some overlap with notes. However, here we’re going very much in a citrus direction.

Secondly, there is plenty of overlap with Legend Red by Montblanc. Blood orange, clary sage, and cardamom are shared notes. That one utilizes grapefruit instead of bergamot and is also smoother/woodier versus the spiciness here.

Nonetheless, I have samples of both, so I’ve experienced the connection over the past few days.

Once that ginger note fades, the clary sage will overtake that and the cardamom note. The juicy citrus takes a step back and this one becomes more fresh aromatic.

At this stage, the sort of minty aroma of the geranium will also peak up and The One Gold will have a woodsy earthiness about it. Like the patchouli and vetiver are there, but they never really make much of an impression.

The final dry down is a sweet and slightly citrus amberwood. Yes, that synthetic smelling amber aroma, with the sage, cardamom, and geranium. It’s not too exciting. Smells fine, mix of sweet wood and fresh notes.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

The sillage here is actually really good for the first hour. It will absolutely tail you around and has the ability to project in the 6-8 foot range. Perhaps, a bit more.

For instance I sprayed it on my wrist and went for a walk outside. The fragrance was extremely noticeable and the most enjoyable that I’ve experienced while testing it out.

The longevity seems to be in the 6-7 hour range, on my skin. Not amazing, but it certainly equal to or better than many of the colognes in this line.

Seasonally, best in the spring and summertime. I really liked wearing this outside on a warm summer day. It wasn’t too hot outside and The One Gold was great in that environment. I’d say outside of winter, this would be fine.

It’s not much of a formal cologne. Daytime into nighttime casual. Certainly has an attractiveness, but not sexy like other The One fragrances. Easy to wear, but certainly not something I’d necessarily want to spray on to go to an office environment.

Overall Impressions of The One Gold

Overall, do I like The One Gold? I like the opening citrus and red ginger. Plus, the next phase. So, call it the first 45 minutes or thereabouts. After that, I don’t hate it, but it’s certainly nothing that I must own.

On the whole, it’s fine. Certainly doesn’t smell even as good as The One EDP Intense or the original EDT. Gold is really just an across the board ‘fine’ fragrance. It doesn’t do anything extremely well or really terribly either.

It is at least different from the other offerings in this line. It’s the least like the other The One colognes in the series. That may or may not be a good thing for you. Personally, I just enjoy the way the others smell more.

The One as a line is one where the eau de parfum is head and shoulders above the others in the series and the flanker scents can be pretty hit or miss. Mostly, they miss.

Gold is good enough, that you might pick it up in certain circumstances, but don’t expect it to be amazing.

The performance is actually pretty good and this can actually project well with a good amount of sprays. So, if you like it, I’d expect you’ll be able to find some cheaper bottles soon and get a great deal out of The One Gold.

I’m not buying a full bottle. It’s good enough to try out, but it’s not really even a cologne that you need to seek and give it a go.

Ranking The One Colognes by D&G

The One from Dolce & Gabbana is a line of fragrances that keeps chugging along and releasing new flanker scents. I recently revisited these colognes and also tried the one’s that I hadn’t gotten to yet, in order to do reviews for the site.

I figured that I should also create a ranking list of the best The One colognes for men, as a more accessible guide on the topic. So, here that is.

The Best

The One EDP– After going back over this entire lineup, the number one option is still The One Eau de Parfum. Taking everything great about the original EDT and adding depth and better performance. 

I grabbed a new bottle for myself, after years of not having any in my collection, just based on re-testing the EDT version.

I personally pick up more grapefruit in the early stages of EDP. That amber and tobacco combination is beefed up and is so fantastic when it hangs in the air. 

You do still need to go heavy on the sprays for this one to perform. With my bottle, I can get 6+ hours and sometimes around 8 with a good amount of spraying. Still not amazing, but it’s what you’ll probably need to do, if you really want to enjoy The One. The One EDP Review

Sweet, Warm, Fruity

The One Luminous Night– For some, this is the best of the entire line. I still think that it’s a notch below EDP, but I also have a bottle currently being shipped to me, since I got a decent price finally.

One thing is for sure, Luminous Night is the best of the limited edition Night colognes that has been released thus far. Update: If you can’t find this, Dua has their inspired take on this cologne.

The opening is a contrast between colder and fresh notes (basil and sage) versus the warmer sweeter notes, highlighted by its signature use of dates.

The fragrance will get warmer, sweet but not overly so. Amber, incense, and woods will round Luminous Night out and creates a fantastic cologne. Nice performance, not a complete beast, though. Luminous Night Review

Update: With my full bottle of this stuff. It can be hit or miss, as to how much I enjoy it. Sometimes, it seems completely like a sage and basil dominant fragrance. Other times, you get a more balanced use of the dates. 

It’s great on occasion, but not something that I want to wear on a daily basis, even in winter. Which, is when it is at its best. Still, a cologne that I’m glad I picked up when I could.

The Original Release

The One EDT– With the original, I will always love how this smells. But, the performance is bad. So, just get the EDP, since it’s basically  the same (more or less).

The EDT will get the third spot, but it wouldn’t be the one to buy, unless you really want to spray the heck out of yourself daily.

Revisiting this original version was great. That light grapefruit note, basil, and the warm amber tying everything together. It’ll only stick for 3-4 hours, if sprayed a lot in the same place, and that’s the main gripe.

Best of the Second Tier Options

The One EDP Intense– This one sort of gets overlooked, as it is the Intense version of the EDP, and doesn’t nearly hit the same level of enjoyment. However, I think that it is actually underrated, and is definitely in the top half of The One releases.

This opens up with a cooler blend of spice and woods. Sage, cypress, and cardamom are all apparent from the opening. A nice amount of spice, but this is a woodier version of the formulation, much like Royal Night (listed below). 

Neroli and cardamom have their moments, but this one actually has a leather note which will come to lead things and a resinous labdanum note, instead of just being the usual amber. The One Intense Review

A Spring/Summer Remix

The One for Men Grey– Grey often gets a bad wrap when compared to some of the others that I have placed below it. While I don’t think that it’s spectacular, The One Grey is marginally better than the others and changes up The One formulation.

What’s the deal with Grey? Well, it’s basically a summertime version of the original formula. The grapefruit in the original is given a large role, the fragrance is lighter and fresher, with much less of that tobacco and amber.

The opening goes bold with an array of spices, complementing the citrus. I get a lot of the basil, but there’s also: cardamom, sage, and coriander. All given more prominence in this when compared to EDT or EDP. 

The vetiver, lavender, and tobacco come out more later on in the wear. It’s clean and an easy one to wear on the warmer days of the year. The One Grey Review

Bold Spice, Dry Wood

The One Royal Night– I actually thought ahead of trying both of them, that I might prefer Royal Night to Luminous Night. But, that wasn’t the case. This is pretty good, but ultimately not a must have for me. A missed opportunity for something great.

Royal Night goes heavy with the spices up front. It goes with the usual cardamom and basil notes, just really amped up, and adds nutmeg. I like it, the spice is dynamic and pretty captivating.

Actually, the cardamom, basil, and nutmeg is a preferable spice mix for me versus the sage and basil of Luminous Night.

Yet, that part is short-lived. The cardamom and cedar notes have there phase, also. However, the dry down is pretty boring with just amber and woods. Super dry and while it doesn’t smell bad or anything, kind of loses its steam, as Royal Night progresses. Royal Night Review

Peppery Vanilla and Lavender

The One Gentleman- The One Gentleman is another fragrance from this line, that I thought I would like more than I actually did. 

This one has a spicy punch early on. The usual cardamom from the rest of the lineup, along with a bigger dose of pepper. It kind of contrasts with the sweetness and creaminess of the vanilla note, but I sort of like how this starts off.

Then, it’ll dry down into more of a vanilla and lavender combination with only lighter bits of spice popping through. It’s got too much freshness and sweetness for me. It gets annoying to wear after a while.

I don’t totally hate The One Gentleman, but it’s not one that I’d really ever reach for either. The One Gentleman Review

Best Performer, Not a Great Scent

The One Mysterious Night– Mysterious Night will be near the top for some people. For me, it’s near the absolute bottom. But, in terms of performance this one is loud and lasts for ages, unlike some of the others.

I bought a travel sprayer decant of this and wore it a few times, before having enough of it.

The main trifecta here is rose, oud, and saffron. I personally love saffron as a note, but have grown to almost hate the repetitive combination of oud and rose, that has become a signature of every high-end designer.

But, if you like those notes, here is an affordable option that is actually blended well. I just cannot get into it. Mysterious Night review

 

Blood Orange Freshness

The One Gold for Men– I actually would personally rather wear this than Mysterious Night, but I can’t really say that it is a great cologne. I don’t want bottles of either, but Gold isn’t all that bad.

This is a heavier use of citrus than even Grey. Along with, aromatic spices. Here you get a strong blood orange, clary sage, and cardamom. Ginger, however, is the strongest of the spicy notes.

That will fade, then you get an earthiness and cold freshness with geranium. Not a complicated fragrance. It has its enjoyable moments, but not really worthwhile Very similar style to Legend Red by Montblanc, but also not as good as that one. The One Gold Review

Last Place

The One Sport- This version came out over a decade ago, following up the success of The One EDT. It’s by far the worst in the series and one that you probably won’t come across in the wild nowadays.

If you merged the bad performance of the EDT with a bland fragrance, you essentially get Sport. It actually reminded me of the old Deep Energy by Adidas, the difference being that fragrance used to cost under $10, while you paid D&G prices for this. The One Sport Review

The One for Men by Dolce & Gabbana is one of the most successful fragrance lines of the past two decades. With that success, comes a whole host of different flanker versions of the original formulation.

They are seemingly endless and have little or a lot to do with the original EDT depending on the edition. But, one that has a ton of overlap with the eau de toilette is The One eau de parfum.

Opening

The One EDT opens up with its grapefruit and spices being the main focus. The citrus note is pretty short-lived, but with that amber pool, the coriander and basil notes really come on beautifully.

But, ginger and cardamom are also present. Providing further warmth and spice to the opening act of EDT. It’s not a heavy spiciness, rather, a freshness tempered by the citrus, amber, and emerging tobacco note.

Now, EDP is mostly the same as the original.

But, to my nose, there are differences. The grapefruit has a larger role to play early on in the EDP version. Not entirely citrusy or anything, but it is more pronounced.

I’d say most of the spice profile is the same, but I do think that the cardamom has been amped up some, furthering the citrus impression that I get, while still providing some spiced warmth.

Beyond that, the amber and tobacco are just stronger and more potent.

Which opening to I prefer? Again, it’s like 95% the same. But, I do like the added depth of the EDP a bit more, so it takes this category.

Projection

The lack of power and staying power is a hallmark of the original The One. If I spray a good amount of EDT, I get 30-45 minutes of a solid scent trail and projection.

5-6 feet from the skin, is about it’s max distance. Thereafter, it’ll be within 2 feet of where you sprayed it.

With EDP, things improve. A little more of a radius at its peak, that’ll give you a nice scent trail and bubble for 2-3.5 hours. After that, it’ll be close to the skin, much like the original.

But, that improved performance is indeed worth it and simply better.

Longevity

The other problem with the original The One for Men was with its longevity. When I first tried it back in the day, I was lucky to get to 2 hours on the skin.

If you go heavy with the sprays (which you should with this cologne), you can stretch that time period to 3-4 hours of wear. Still, pretty darn poor versus what you’re paying.

With EDP, normal sprays nets me about 4-5 hours of wear. With heavy sprays, I can go 6+ hours and up to about 8.

Way better and much more acceptable as a fragrance.

It’s still not amazing, but it works out just fine with the eau de parfum. Plenty of time to enjoy the cologne.

Versatility

As far as when and how each should be worn, they’re exactly the same.

Seasonally, autumn and winter, mainly. But, I will still wear them in spring and summer, if it isn’t too hot and humid. Though, it is mostly an indoor only option with air conditioning going.

A nightlife machine, that is sexy and confident.  You can wear them in a variety of situations, appropriate for a wide array of ages, but may not want to go completely formal with it.

Romantic wear, nightlife, casual, and semi-formal.

Overall Scent

Overall, which fragrance is better? The clear choice is the eau de parfum. The scent itself is overwhelmingly the same, as the original. Plus, the performance is better across the board.

I love the way the original EDT smells, I can pick up those slight differences early on, but it doesn’t change the outcome of this comparison.

Frankly, the performance of The One for Men EDT is too terrible. The price nowadays is fine, but even with heavy sprays, you’d have to apply and re-apply constantly.

Sure, EDP isn’t a powerhouse, but it does give you hours of solid wear before becoming a lighter fragrance. I wear it fairly often and don’t have much in the way of complaints about its performance.

The One Eau de Parfum gives you a deeper and richer fragrance. That amber and tobacco is still awesome and this is a sent that I have come back to recently and will continue to wear into the future.

If you want a The One fragrance, the EDP is the best. There are some other good ones like, Luminous Night, but EDP still reigns supreme.

The One is a series of fragrances that has spun of a bunch of flankers, including the ‘Night’ special editions. Luminous Night released in 2021, is one that has gotten a lot of attention out of those three, to the point where finding a bottle is an expensive proposition. Is it actually worth it? How does it smell? Does it last long?

Here’s how D&G describes it: Inspired by the captivating contrast between the deep blue night sky and the blazing gold stars set within it, The One Luminous Night conjures the magic and splendour of a star-studded Arabian night.

When I first saw the notes, bottle, and concept of The One Luminous Night I was excited to try it. The blue bottle looks great.

However, since it was a limited edition and not sold in the US, I kind of forgot about it for a while.

Forgot to the point that bottles became scarce, and I had to secure a decant of it for testing. Knowing that, I would probably plop down the near $200 for a bottle off of eBay if I loved the fragrance.

Upon spraying, I do get the contrast between cool and the warm notes. The early part of this scent is fresh with the sweetness of the dates lurking underneath.

Sage and basil are the stronger of the spicy notes to be. I don’t get all that much black pepper and only a faint peak of the geranium note. The pepper is mostly around for the first 15 minutes, then is pretty much gone.

It is interesting, the style here reminds me of one of the L’Homme Ideal flankers, even while they don’t smell the same. Smokiness, warmth, spice, with a nice fruit providing a sweet heart.

The initial freshness will subside. Sage sticks around, but it will fall down the chain of importance.

Dates, amber, incense, and wood. Expect that to be the main event for basically the rest of the wear. The dates are nice, more of a dried fruit aroma, than anything hyper-sweet or juicy.

Slightly smoky dates sitting in a pool of amber is how I would describe this one. In the middle act, the geranium while still not heavy, does pick up somewhat. Once that pepper is out of the way, I can get more of it.

Update: Now that I have a full sized bottle of Luminous Night, I’ve noticed that it does present somewhat differently, on any given wear. Sometimes, the sage is massive. Other times, this is much more of the warm and sweet aroma led by the date note. When the sage is super heavy, I enjoy this less.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatility

Sillage wise, this isn’t a powerhouse. Actually pretty moderate, at its height and then more intimate, without being a complete skin scent. The opening can indeed pack a punch, however. For me, that is a pretty short-lived experience.

The projection runs about 2-4 feet off of the skin for much of the wear. I do notice it on me throughout, just not a complete monster.

It lasts somewhere in the 7-8 hour range. Again, it’s not a strong fragrance, but it does stick around. It’s one of the better The One fragrances, in terms of performance. Which, isn’t one of the series’ strong suits.

Seasonally, this is best in autumn and winter. But, as a nighttime fragrance, if it isn’t too hot and sticky out…you can wear it whenever. Definitely avoid wearing Luminous Night, during the day in spring and summer, especially. Can be a pretty cloying cologne, in that situation.

It’s very attractive and well put together. Semi formal or even formal social situations would be fine. It can absolutely be worn dressed up, while still having its sexy side as a date night go to.

But, that being said, I do prefer this as more of a casual or ‘going out’ nighttime fragrance. The sweetness and warmth feels more in line with that versus being a pure formal play.

Overall Impressions of Luminous Night

Overall, do I like Luminous Night? I do enjoy it. I think that is smells very good, but it isn’t a total love for me. I don’t know if I’m going to get a full bottle for myself (I might still), since that would run me $200 or so.

Update: I did get a bottle, once I found one for around $100. Still sort of feel like I overpaid, but wasn’t too terrible of a deal.

That being the case, it is one of the best The One releases. Better performing than the EDT, even if I enjoy the smell of that a bit more. Plus, I do have a full EDP bottle too.

I actually really like that opening act, with its burst of freshness to contrast against the warmth of the rest of the wear. Basil, pepper, sage, and geranium with a bright bergamot is great. The date note is also very attractive.

I really like everything about this release. I’m just not floored by it. When I compare it to another expensive release I purchased a full bottle of, Noir Extreme, it just doesn’t hit me on the same level.

Update: That sage note, can be somewhat annoying depending on how it shows up on any given day. Sometimes, it just smells overwhelming versus the date and even other spicier ingredients.

I recommend it. If this were a more available scent, I’d probably tell everyone that it’s one to pick up. At $200? Maybe not for everyone. But, it also is a safe blind buy based on the smell and performance alone.

Scarcity made this one go from a sure thing, to something you may want to track down decants of before committing to the entire thing.

The One line has spawned a ton of different fragrances over the years. I have gone through and reviewed all of them except for today’s entry, The One Gentleman. This is actually an older release which came out back in 2010. How does it smell? Does it last long? Is it actually worth a try?

My Full Review

The One Gentlemen starts off with a burst of the same cardamom note found in the rest of the ‘The One’ series of colognes. It’s pronounced flanked by a peppery spice and the underlying familiarity of vanilla.

There’s something a bit different about this opening though. I think it is the inclusion of the watercress note. A bit of a fresh herbal smell, not something I come across routinely, and not exactly sure if I like it or not in this mix.

That watercress aroma will tone down as we move along and basically have no influence thereafter.

After this initial phase passes, the lavender note comes in, to join the cardamom in being the main event. With the lavender, the vanilla note feels a bit powdery less of a creaminess here, and the pepper still commands some attention.

Patchouli sort of takes over for the watercress, giving this a greener/earthy influence. As it wears on, this is less spicy more of a classic creamy vanilla and the lavender note which stays strong throughout.

Gentleman really does turn into a lavender heavy fragrance the deeper you get into its development. It’s all pretty fresh and somewhat sweet, with a unique take on The One name.

Sillage, Longevity, and Versatilty

Sillage wise, it’s above average, but its initial punch doesn’t last super long. About an hour plus of decent scent trail creation and projection off of the skin. After that, The One Gentleman is going to be closer to the skin, but with a few feet of projection.

After 4 hours, it’s basically a skin scent.

The longevity is okay. I get somewhere in the 5-6.5 hour range with this Dolce & Gabbana fragrance. It doesn’t go beyond that high end and can also quit a bit before it hits the five hour mark.

Pretty average to somewhat above average, sort of depends on the day for me.

Seasonally, I like this best in the autumn or winter. I’d avoid the high heat of summer, but it isn’t too cloying in a more moderate spring-like setting.

It does have a pretty great amount of versatility. It could be a daily wear, good for younger guys, and even venture into the nightlife. It’s not the most well put together cologne, so, I don’t think it lives up to the ‘Gentleman’ moniker. 

It’s not anything that’s going to jump out as being overbearing or cheap, but I don’t think it has much appeal as a formal sort of fragrance.

 

 

Overall Impressions of The One Gentleman

Overall, do I like this cologne? I don’t hate it, but it really doesn’t appeal much to me either. This is a scent that I thought I’d enjoy more based on the notes, but it doesn’t hit the mark. 

The vanilla and the cardamom are highlights of the experience. When it turns more into a lavender bomb, Gentleman sort of loses me. It’s fine, just nothing really impressive here. Gentleman ranks in the back half of The One colognes, in my opinion.

The performance is fair. Not a powerhouse and not something that’s going to last all day, while not being utterly useless either. 

For a lot of guys, this is going to be a pass, as there isn’t a distinct reason to own it. Some seem to like this one, but for most it’s just decent. If you can find it at a huge discount, then, why not? Otherwise, why?
